John Christopher Mooney began his race riding career at Wye on April 14, 1947, when Kilbride was unplaced in the Novices’ Chase (Division 2).

He achieved his sole success on November 8 of that year when Crusader II won the Minehead Selling Handicap Chase at Taunton, beating 16-year-old veteran Samtac, the mount of Ben Lay, by five lengths. Trained by Tom Coombs, the 12-year-old was having his first run since falling with John in the saddle at Buckfastleigh in May.

Crusader II was sold after the race, and although John Mooney battled on for five more seasons, there were no more wins. His final ride was at Worcester on October 31, 1953, when Solatium was unplaced in the Sidbury Juvenile Hurdle.
