Adrian McCarthy

Adrian Michael McCarthy was born on March 7, 1979. He was a star graduate of the British Racing School and rode a personal best 60 winners as an apprentice in 1998.

Like many successful apprentices, Adrian struggled after losing his claim and his scores dwindled to single figures. Newmarket trainer Mark Tompkins was among those who continued to support him, enabling him to post a score of 13 in 2003. He then forged a successful partnership with trainer Roger Harris, who provided him with 16 of his 35 wins in 2006. Thereafter, however, his scores fell back to single figures.

He rode for Peter Chapple-Hyam and partnered 2007 Derby winner Authorized in work on the home gallops. He also rode successfully in the Middle East.

Adrian rode his last winner on Thank You Joy for John Jenkins in a class 6 handicap at Chepstow on August 24, 2011. Two months later he relinquished his licence shortly after finishing ninth of ten on My Lady Picolla in a Lingfield all-weather maiden.

He made a brief return to the saddle during the summer of 2016, having his last ride on the Robin Brisland-trained Masonic, who finished ninth of 12 in a two-year-old maiden at Kempton on August 17.

He renewed his licence in the summer of 2019 and is now back riding again.
