Michael Moloney

Michael Moloney was born on January 9, 1967. He rode as a northern-based jump jockey between the late 1980s and late 1990s.

He was based for much of his career with Gordon W. Richards and Greystoke and enjoyed his best season in 1992/93 when he rode 18 winners. They included three back-to-back wins in 3m 1f chases at Kelso on Whaat Fettle, landing the Famous Grouse Handicap Chase and the Anthony Marshall Trophy, both in October, and the Pat de Clermont Challenge Cup in November.

Later that month they finished second to Bradbury Star in the Steel Plate and Sections Young Chasers Championship Final at Cheltenham, then finished second again to Bluff Knoll in the Champion Handicap Chase at Kelso. Returning to Kelso in December, they atoned for those two defeats by winning the Charlie Young Memorial Handicap Chase over three and a half miles.

On February 13, 1993, Michael won the Mellerays Belle Challenge Cup Chase at Ayr on the Richards-trained Kilhallon Castle, the first leg of a double completed by novice hurdler Ardlussa Bay for Malton trainer (and Richards’ former assistant) Malcolm Jefferson. Among his other winners that season was a Carlisle novices’ hurdle on Richards’ Tartan Tradewinds.

From thereon, however, Michael’s winning tallies dropped, falling to eleven in 93/94, six in 94/95 and just three in 95/96, by which time he was riding mainly for Alistair Whillans. He also rode for Jack Berry and Jack Birkett. He rode four winners in 1997/98 but had quit the saddle by the start of the millennium.
