James Alan Morton, known as Jim, rode one winner during a career that lasted for three seasons.
Associated with the stable of Tommy Barnes at Penrith, Cumbria, he had his first ride at Ayr on October 12, 1974, when Gilmarsh finished a creditable fourth, beaten less than three lengths, in the Fiveways Opportunity Handicap Hurdle. He finished second on another occasion that season when Vignette filled that position at Sedgefield on May 29, but it was to be another year before he finally rode a winner.
It came at Cartmel on Whit Monday, May 31, 1976, in the Cark Novices’ Chase when Cool Angel beat three rivals, finishing eight lengths ahead of Just About. The winning pair had run at the same course two days earlier when a well-beaten third.
It was on another bank holiday Monday that Jim’s career ended, when Cool Lynne was brought down after the third flight in the Warnell Fell Novices’ Hurdle at Carlisle on Easter Monday, April 11, 1977.
