The 1903 Manchester Cup
Charles Beatty. who trained Zinfandel to win the Coronation Cup, died in 1917 from wounds received in France.
Thomas' first big winner came on June 6 1903 when winning the Manchester Cup on Zinfandel
Later that month, on June 19, Thomas rode outsider Glass Jug to victory in the Wokingham Stakes. The day was ruined for most racegoers by rain which 'pitilessly beat down all day long'. Before the first race, most people present were drenched, and the going was extremely heavy.
In December, 1904, due mainly to the efforts of French trainer James Breze, once an apprentice jockey with Richard Marsh at Newmarket, Thomas was offered a retainer to ride as as first jockey for M. Ed. Ribeaucourt in 1905. Having watched his good friend Sam Heapy top the list of Belgium jockeys the previous season, Thomas gladly accepted the retainer. He left Newmarket on Wednesday February 8 1905 to take up his position. The flat season in Belgium opened on Sunday March 12 at Groenendael. He did not take long to distinquish himself. On Sunday, April 2, Thomas rode his first two winners, before, on Monday May 1 at Brussels Racecourse, winning the Prix De La Toison D'Or on Dulcissima.
Having ridden 18 winners, he took a few days' holiday to slip back to England on Tuesday June 20 to attend the Ascot meeting, where he shook hands with his old colleagues.
James Breze died in July 1910.
On Sunday July 16, Thomas rode three winners at Ostend Races.
Thomas' three winners at Ostend.
In late 1905, Thomas was the target of scurrilous rumours that might have derailed his career had it not been for the unequivocal backing of his stable.
In 1908, jockeys T. L. Miller, Leslie Hewitt and William Griggs enjoyed a short holiday together in Monte Carlo.
1909 proved a bad year for Thomas in Belgium. The victim of accidents, his winning total was reduced to 14.
Because of the war, 1919 found him in Cremons, Italy, attached to a remount depot.
He declared his intention to one day return to England, but there is no evidence to show that he did so.
