Understanding Orbital Motion Through A Gravity Well
Physics students explore the concept of orbital motion governed by Kepler’s Laws using a gravity well demonstration in the classroom. This setup visually represents the gravitational field surrounding the Sun, depicted by a heavy metal ball at the center of the spandex sheet. Students use marbles to illustrate how planets orbit the Sun along elliptical paths with changes in speed and period, highlighting the influence of the Sun's gravitational pull. This hands-on experience enhances their understanding of how gravity affects celestial bodies in space.
