Physics for Sports Helmets
Lillian Labowsky's Physics CP students applied physics principles to make sports helmets safer - adding a soft shell outside the helmet
to reduce impact force and protect athletes from concussions.

Airbags- Where Chemistry Saves Lives!
In the study of the stoichiometry unit, Lillian Labowsky's Chemistry Honors students engineered airbags to safeguard their passenger – an egg. Employing stoichiometric precision, they meticulously designed the bag to attain optimal fullness without excess ingredients – baking soda and vinegar. Their efforts involved a “crash test” by dropping the egg and airbag from a third-floor staircase and a surgical examination of the egg passengers. In concluding this engaging engineering exercise, the students compared and contrasted their airbags with real-world car airbags, gaining trade-off insight into the Takata airbag recall.
The Takata airbags were recalled because of a change in ingredients to save the cost but made them too explosive upon deployment.

Civil Engineering Club Volunteers With Habitat For Humanity
The Civil Engineering Club participated in its first volunteering event with Habitat for Humanity at the end of December. Ten club members worked at a build site in Paterson that will eventually house eight families. The students learned some new skills and worked on laying sub floors, building steps and rails for outdoor decks, and painting. They look forward to returning in the spring to continue the build!
