In the Classroom
The Chemistry of Coins
The US Mint changed the penny’s composition from copper to another metal with copper coating sometime between 1977 & 1986. Chemistry Honors students were tasked to develop experimental procedures to determine what year the change happened and what metal replaced copper. Afterward, they used the S.C.A.M.P.E.R. method to brainstorm the change.
Pictured from left to right are Leonid Krivenko, Luke Inzerillo, John Kedersha, and Taeyoung Cha.
Building & Design
In Mr. Wohner's Building and Design level 3 class, these 4 students worked together to build a new wall mounted rack to hang clamps on. They were given the opportunity to enhance the design by creating a graphic out of copper. The metal was engraved using a laser etching technique. The team were thrilled with the results and hope that it will stay in the school well after they graduate.
