Junior Yuna Kim (pictured) is leading an environmental initiative with help from seniors Kiehye Song and Juyoung Lee and the Village Shade Tree Commission.
They are visiting schools to teach students about the impact of invasive species on local ecosystems and the importance of planting native species. As part of the program, students are planting acorns that will grow into oak trees.
The initiative began at Benjamin Franklin Middle School, where approximately 50 acorns were planted and is now expanding to Hawes and Travell Elementary Schools, with plans to reach additional schools throughout the Village.
Project Interact members assisted at Easter in the Park at Van Neste Square in Ridgewood. Students helped with both the set up and clean up in addition to the various activities throughout the day. Students were also at Stop & Shop to collect donations at the food drive and then sort the collected items at RHS. Project Interact also collected toiletry items and made a donation to Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative.

The RHS Green Club hosted the high school's fourth annual Sustainability Day last Friday, in which a whopping sixty students helped to present different ways students and staff can become more environmentally-friendly and contribute towards both a healthier planet and a healthier community.
Topics ranged from recycling quizzes, to the benefits of planting trees, to the effects of using artificial intelligence. Mr. Kase also hosted eco-friendly life hacks and a dumpster dive. Additionally, Deputy Mayor Pam Perron and Department of Sanitation Supervisor Sean Hamlin joined in for a speaker panel.
Thanks to everyone who came out and interacted with all of our presenters. Even though Earth Day and Sustainability Day are just once a year, don't forget that we should be conscious of our environmental impacts on a daily basis. You can always be part of the solution! If you would like to participate in this effort more, feel free to join the Green Club - it is never too late in the year to join!
