In the Classroom
Protein Synthesis with a Cheerleading Twist
Mr. Peralta’s biology class explored protein synthesis through a scenario featuring him as Erick, the cheerleading captain. The assignment included a photo of Mr. Peralta cheering at a pep rally (shown here) and demonstrated how protein issues affect energy and muscle recovery, boosting student engagement and making biology more relatable! Way to think outside the box, Mr. Peralta!
Electrostatics Exploration in Physics
In their recent studies of electrostatics, physics students engaged in a hands-on experiment that brought the principles of this fascinating topic to life. They charged the balloon using their hair to demonstrate the effects of static electricity, successfully bending streams of water as a visual representation of electrostatic forces in action. Students made significant efforts to create a spark using the Wimshurst machine to witness the power of electrostatics firsthand.
Building on this foundational knowledge, the students explored various applications of electrostatics in modern technology. They learned how photocopying machines, smoke alarms, and even bees use electrostatics to help pollinate flowers!
Club Happenings
Applied Engineering Club
The Applied Engineering Club has a membership of 248 students, who form 30 diverse teams representing all grade levels and a wide range of interests. Under the guidance of eleven dedicated senior leaders (Maggie Zhou, Krish Tulsidas, Kianna Carroll, Mathias Nguyen-Van-Duong, Aaron Shefter, Nathaniel Han, Anita Patel, Trevor Phillips, Aditya Rajesh, Daniel Khalitov and Evan Matsibekker) who serve as mentors. These student innovators have spent the past four months engaged in brainstorming sessions, team meetings, and hands-on experiments. As a result of their hard work and creativity, teams have transformed their ideas into impactful 2-minute videos. This year, advisors Richard Plattel and Lillian Labowsky proudly submitted 12 teams to the NJSTEAM Tank Challenge, and 11 teams entered the Thomas Edison Pitch Contest!
The spirit of innovation and problem-solving thrives at RHS as students invent technical solutions to address challenges within our school, community, and the broader world. Let us celebrate and draw inspiration from their remarkable creativity and ingenuity!
