Around the School
We’re excited to share the highlights from Ridgewood High School’s first annual Homecoming Dance, held this past Tuesday evening. The event was a resounding success, selling out and bringing together our vibrant student community for a night of fun and celebration.
The high school was transformed into a festive venue, with dancing taking place in the Campus Center, where our lively DJ kept the dance floor packed with students showing off their best moves. Dressed in their finest attire, students embraced the spirit of the evening, creating an atmosphere filled with joy and excitement. For those looking to catch a breath of fresh air, the courtyard provided an outdoor space where students could socialize and relax.
In addition to the dancing, our cafeteria was bustling with activities, offering a variety of games and snacks that kept everyone entertained and hydrated. It was wonderful to see our students enjoying not just the music, but also the opportunity to connect with friends and make lasting memories.
A huge thank you to our dedicated staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this event possible. Your support and enthusiasm helped create a welcoming environment that our students truly enjoyed.
We look forward to many more events like this in the future that celebrate our school community. Thank you for your continued support in making RHS a fantastic place for our students to learn and grow!
Merci beaucoup to the Ridgewood Community for welcoming the French Exchange students from Lille with open arms. They spent 10 amazing days in the homes of Ridgewood High School students, learning about American culture firsthand while working on their English language skills. The 17 students and 3 teachers expressed nothing but gratitude for their generous host families and the welcoming atmosphere of RHS. Tears were shed when they had to leave for the airport last Monday but we look forward to seeing our “correspondants” again when we stay with them next school year.
In the Classroom
Students in Mrs. Ingoglia and Ms. Rosenfeld's Precalculus I class played Radian and Degree WAR by identifying the cards
with angles that had the higher value, in hopes of winning each round and obtaining their opponents cards!
Students in Mrs. Stucke's forensic science class learned about properly packaging evidence at a crime scene. In the spirit of Halloween, Students were able to try on Tyvek suits that crime scene investigators wear when processing a crime scene. This hands-on experience emphasized the importance of meticulous procedures in forensic investigations.
On October 9th, the American Studies AP Research students toured the Lower East Side, specifically the Tenement Museum and then the Eldridge Street Museum, where they were introduced to the myriad of cultures that came to reside on the Lower East Side. They came in waves, and as they came the neighborhoods changed. Built in 1887, The Eldridge Street Synagogue has a unique history in bringing the neighborhood together and providing relief for some 2.5 million Jewish immigrants who came to America at the turn of the 20th century, specifically from 1880 to 1924. The museum emphasizes that the synagogue was more than a place to pray-it was a spiritual home. The Synagogue is only one of the places students saw on this day complementing their study of immigration. See: https://www.eldridgestreet.org/history
In the study of projectile motion, students in Labowsky Physics CP had the opportunity to engage in a variety of hands-on activities and analyses. They watched footage of Apollo 14 astronaut Alan Shepard playing golf on the moon, a low-gravity environment. The students then turned their attention to analyzing the throwing mechanism of NFL quarterback Tom Brady, examining the physics principles that govern the motion of a football throw.
To further their understanding, the class took advantage of a beautiful sunny day by throwing balls on the football field and measuring the range and air time. The students applied kinematic equations to determine the launch velocity and angle of their projectiles. Two standout students, Alexander Han and Benjamin Sigler, achieved a remarkable velocity of 25 m/s, just a little shy of the 27 m/s (60 mph) regularly thrown by baseball legend Derek Jeter.
Through these activities, students learned to apply the principles of physics to various sports, deepening their understanding of the underlying science that governs the motion of objects in the physical world.
The MIT Undergraduate Research Technology Conference (URTC) took place from October 11-13 on MIT’s campus. It offers a platform for emerging researchers to share their work and make connections with peers and industry professionals. Roughly 150 of the 300 paper submissions, including our senior Margret Zhou's paper on an Experimental Investigation of Climate Change-Induced Soil Humidity Variations on Stomatal Dynamic Behavior, were presented at the conference and will be published in the IEEE Xplore Journal.
The Ridgewood HS Marching Band took home a State Championship banner this past weekend at the USBands Group 4A New Jersey State Championships! With a score of 93, the band won caption awards for Best Music, Best Visual, Best Effect, and Best Color Guard.
The band now heads to Allentown, Pennsylvania this Sunday, November 3, to compete in USBands National Championships, held at J. Birney Crum Stadium. This competition will feature bands from five states: New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Maine, and Connecticut.
The band, under the direction of John Luckenbill, has had a great 2024 season performing their show “Teenage Wasteland,” which features the famous tune ‘Baba O’Riley’ by The Who! The band traveled to Annapolis, MD, to perform at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, and has taken home numerous awards this season.
Best of luck to the band as they head to Allentown, PA this Sunday!
Ridgewood High School's French Club celebrated Halloween with a sweet treat! With the help of Madame Donovan, who made the batter, the club served crêpes to its members. Club-goers were able to add nutella, bananas, and sugar to their crêpes. Crêpes originated from France in the late 13th century and are usually made with a simple batter of flour, eggs, and milk. Since its creation, crêpes have become a beloved national dish which are often eaten on special occasions such as Mardi Gras. Club members enjoyed their crêpes to French music while they chatted with each other.
Come to the next meeting if you're interested in French culture, cuisine, history or traditions! It will be held on November 15th, in room 332 during lunch. Invite your friends!
