Students in Mr. Luo's AP Environmental Science classes tested different surfaces to see how well they could absorb water and slow down water flow from a rainstorm. They tested bare soil, gravel, vegetation, leaf mulch, and impervious surfaces like asphalt. They were not surprised to find that asphalt absorbed the least amount of water and led to the fastest water runoff, which helped to explain why Ridgewood (which has 43% of its land covered in impermeable surface!) can flood so easily after a rainstorm.
Richard Diamond and Mia Monte measure how much water flows downstream in areas covered with impermeable surfaces.
Josie Suozzo, Henry Walsh and Sude Otaner simulate a rainstorm in an area covered with leaf mulch.
Mrs. Maxwell's Studio Art AP I and II classes visited Glassroots, Inc. in Newark to participate in glassmaking demos and workshops on Wednesday, December 11th. Students made their own glass beads, mosaics, and etched glass bottles, and learned about the process of glass blowing.

Club Happenings
The Green Club continues to make positive changes on campus. In late November, Green Club members took advantage of a bare patch of mulch near the Little Theater and planted native wildflowers. In the spring, look out for an assortment of flowers, which will provide native pollinating insects with a food source throughout the growing season. The flowers are low maintenance and will be able to survive a wide range of environmental conditions while providing valuable habitat for local wildlife. They will serve as a welcome roadside attraction as well!
Eleanor Leonard prepares the wildflower seeds for sowing.
Green Club members sow the wildflower seeds into the ground.
Green Club members then installed protective burlap over the seeds to insulate them over the winter and protect them from wildlife and the elements.

Project Interact was involved in several events during the months of November and December. Members helped with flag removal of veterans at Valleau Cemetery in Ridgewood and at the used book fair at Sommerville Elementary School. Students also volunteered at Winterfest and Downtown for Holidays in Ridgewood. Congratulations to the November Members of the Month, Lauren Lee and Donna Hyun. They did an amazing job volunteering and making banners for the Veteran's breakfast and to celebrate the RHS Marching Band placing first in both States and Nationals this season.
