To celebrate Earth Day, AP Environmental Science students visited Travell Elementary School and put on the elementary school version of Sustainability Day. All Travell students watched a skit presented by members of the New Players, and then visited high school student presentations on what elementary schoolers could do to be more environmentally-friendly. We are hoping that the youngest students in the Ridgewood community will appreciate what they have learned and carry these ideas on through middle school and eventually, RHS.

As part of their long-term sustainability projects, AP Environmental Science students have been maintaining rain gardens constructed in past years, as well as installing new plantings in newer areas. The 1000 square-foot Vets Rain Garden was built last year and while most plants have survived, some bare areas were spruced up with invasive weed removal and have gotten new plants. It has since been mulched and outlined with new river rocks. Check it out! Closer to campus, one group of students has planted a variety of flowers in the roundabout, while another installed native plants in the courtyard. These native plants will hopefully require less maintenance, while providing habitat for wildlife, absorbing stormwater, and providing aesthetic benefits for the local community. Please be mindful not to step on the new plants in these areas!

Sophomores Noah Gunes, David Kang, Julian Song, and Joshua Moon are advancing to the national contest of National History Day with their documentary, Revolt in the Rockies: The Colorado Coalfield War.
On Saturday, May 3rd, 524 students met at William Paterson to present their work and compete for the chance to qualify for the National History Day Contest. New Jersey is sending a cohort of 77 students with 35 projects to the National Contest in College Park, MD, in June. National History Day is a year-long academic program focused on historical research, interpretation and creative expression for 6th- to 12th-grade students. This year's theme is Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History.
April 26th was National Dissertation Day! In honor of the day, the
Math Department celebrated the achievements of Dr. Richardson
and Dr. Weinstein, who both successfully defended their dissertations this year to earn the esteemed title of "doctor". They, along with
Dr. McNamee, are the three members of the math department that earned this distinction.
Mr. Cronk’s AP Art History students participated in a field trip to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City last Friday to directly engage with works of art studied throughout the academic year. With the AP Art History Exam scheduled for next week, the experience provided a timely and meaningful opportunity for students to reinforce their understanding of key artistic movements, artists, and works included in the College Board’s required 250-image set.
DECA Brings Home the Win
RHS DECA had a wonderful trip with 46 students attending ICDC in Atlanta, Georgia. Each event has approximately 200 teams/students and they are broken up into 10 flights with 20 teams/students in each flight. The students participated in a preliminary round and later learned which students would move on to the final round of competition. Only the top 2 teams/students move onto the final round. We are pleased to announce that we had 3 paper teams make finals. Kyra Gerena & Scarlet Fitzpatrick made it to finals in their Community Giving Project. Katherine Cho and Emily Cho competed in the Buying & Merchandising Operations Research Event and made it to finals. Anna Dickson and Christina Weispfenning, who also competed in the Buying and Merchandising Operations Research event, also made finals. Finalists then had to present one more time to a new set of judges. These judges did NOT judge that category’s preliminary round. All three finalist groups were able to complete a few practice rounds with our chaperones and then run through their scripts themselves before checking in for their appointed competition time. The students then attended the Grand Award session, where only the top 10 finalists were announced. Once the top 10 from a category are on stage, they then announce the top 3, who take home DECA glass (the trophy is a nice glass plaque). We are pleased to share that Anna Dickson and Christina Weispfenning not only were called to stage to earn top 10 honors, but placed 1st OVERALL in their BMOR category. This is the first time in over 25 years since RHS has had a top 3 winner at ICDC! It was incredible to hear their names called as the winners of their event and the joy and excitement from our chapter was incredible.
Below are some chapter photos, photos of the finalists, and Anna & Christina getting their award on stage!

The Green Club attended the Daffodil Festival and Earth Day Fair, where they educated visitors on the problems caused by invasive species and the benefits of replacing portions of lawn with wildflower meadows. Members also helped the Shade Tree Commission give away free trees. Mr. Luo still has trees in his classroom if anyone is interested in planting a tree on their property!

Want your student to be part of something like this? Crew is one of the only sports where you can start in high school with zero experience and still reach the top. Some of this season's standouts didn't pick up an oar until sophomore year.
Learn To Row registration is open now for RPS students in grades 6 through 11.
