Around the School

Solar Eclipse

In honor of Monday's solar eclipse staff members wore black or white and were treated to solar eclipse themed Krispy Kreme donuts.  After classes let out many students and staff gathered on the front lawn to catch this incredible phenomena.

Maroon & White Art Show

Thursday, March 21st was the reception for the March Maroon and White music performances and art exhibition. The Maroon and White Recital Series began in the spring of 1964 and has been a means of highlighting outstanding Ridgewood High School musicians, artists, and dancers. Participating artists left to right: Sariyah Brown, Anastasia Toporova, Ash Spencer, Charlotte Sands, Parker Langheim, and Sude Otaner.

READ ACROSS AMERICA

The National Honor Society planned another successful Read Across America event for RHS! Students and staff gathered in the campus center to enjoy a day of independent reading on Wednesday, April 3rd. Attendees brought their own books or browsed a selection of books from our RHS Learning Commons, displayed by genre. NHS members donated a variety of snacks to help sponsor the event!

In the Classroom

Chemistry Honors

In the study of aqueous solutions, Mrs. Labowsky’s Chemistry Honors students meticulously quantified color through a dilution process using a colorimeter. Through this method, they established a calibration line to determine the unknown concentration of a test sample. Such graphing methodologies are commonly employed in engineering practice. Additionally, the students applied the concept of colligative properties to make delicious ice cream, ushering in the arrival of spring with a delightful treat.

Mrs. Labowsky’s chemistry honors classes took on the Alka Selzer Challenge to marvel at the reaction mechanism using balloons to capture carbon dioxide, which built excitement for witnessing the ultimate wonder of the solar eclipse!

Statistics with Finance Course

Students in Mrs. Anderson's Statistics with Finance course learned about filing taxes and completed a 1040 form activity using either their own W2 or a sample W2 to file their 2023 tax return!

Forensics

Students in Forensics classes conducted a "rat autopsy" in order to learn more about the autopsy process.

Freshman F.O.C.U.S.

Freshmen F.O.C.U.S. classes are wrapping up this week for the 2023-2024 school year.

Thank you to Mrs. Watson, Mr. Cronk, Mr. Kase and all of the Peer Counselors for another successful year transitioning our 9th graders to RHS.

The goal of Freshmen F.O.C.U.S. is to provide a solid foundation and immediate sense of community that strives to enhance the academic and personal success for each student.

Club Happenings

Acabellas

Over spring break, the AcaBellas competed against the 9 best high school a cappella groups in the region in the International Championship of High School A Cappella Mid-Atlantic Semifinals and got first place! They will be moving on to Finals in NYC at The Town Hall on Friday, April 26th. This is the first time a Ridgewood a cappella group has made it to the Finals and will compete against the best high school a cappella groups from across the country.  Additionally, Ava Fontus received the Outstanding Vocal Percussionist Award for the whole set and Bianca David received the Outstanding Soloist Award for "Have Mercy." Get your tickets to the show at Ticketmaster. More information about a fan bus taking students, staff, and families to the show will be forthcoming.

RHS World Support Alliance

The RHS World Support Alliance held its first event on Thursday, March 21st, and it was an incredible success!  They organized an 8th-grade mixer/dance, with approximately 300 8th graders in attendance.  They extend their heartfelt appreciation to all the Club Team members and chaperones who generously contributed their time and effort to make the event a memorable one. Thank you for your invaluable support!

French National Honor Society

Ten members of the French National Honor Society, and advisor Mme Laura Polk, visited the fifth grade classes (of Mr. Sabatino, Mrs. Graziano, and Mr. O'Herlihy) at Travell Elementary School on March 14th. This was our first elementary school visit since 2020. FNHS members presented an introductory lesson of Francophone geography, greetings and numbers, culminating in several rounds of Bingo (with prizes!). The high school students really enjoyed interacting with the fifth graders, whose enthusiasm left a lasting impression. Visits to the other elementary schools are in the works.

Computer Club

Students in the RHS Computer Club gather together for their bi-weekly meeting.

RHS graduate Cailin Bracken meets with RHS girls lacrosse
