Around the School
On Thursday, November 14, Ridgewood High School hosted an event to honor local veterans from American Legion Post 53, as well as other veterans from the community. The veterans were welcomed to the school for a morning of meaningful conversations with students. During these discussions, students asked questions about the veterans' service and how their military experiences had shaped their lives. The veterans shared how their service had left a lasting impact on their views of the world. This event was a memorable opportunity for RHS students to connect with and show appreciation for these remarkable veterans in our community.
A group of RHS students commenced participation in the Bergen County Equity Think Tank with fellow students (approximately 90 in all) from a dozen different schools in the county. Hosted by Ramapo College of NJ, follow-up workshops will occur on two additional dates in the winter and spring.

On Tuesday, November 20, the RHS orchestras put on an amazing performance featuring the RHS Symphonic, Concert and Chamber Orchestra. The concert concluded with a grand finale of all the RHS Orchestra musicians along with 8th grade orchestra students from BF and GW. Ms. Geronimo did a superb job directing all of the amazing RHS musicians with the assistance of RPS middle school Orchestra Directors Ms. King and Ms. Zlotkin. Bravo!
A huge thank you to Ms. Geronimo for facilitating both the RHS 8th grade Orchestra Day back in October as well as last evening's concert performance at RHS. This was an amazing experience for both our middle school students and for us as orchestra directors.
Enjoy a short video from the evening's performance.
Anders Ryen, RHS junior, performed as the bass player for the 2024 New Jersey All State Jazz Ensemble. The ensemble performed at the NJ Performing Arts Center on Friday, November 15, after a successful performance in Atlantic City during the NJEA Convention.
In the Classroom
The publishing team at Cambridge University Press and Assessment chose Ridgewood High School for a school site visit this week. Representatives of The Press sat in on over a dozen different language classes at the freshmen and sophomore levels, hosted by generous teachers who graciously opened up their rooms for the sake of observation. Two of the three members of the team hail directly from the United Kingdom (having grown up in Belgium and Italy) and thoroughly enjoyed the American education classes that they were invited to watch. Their experiences at RHS will help the Cambridge team as they work to develop resources for students around the world.

It was the time of the year when chemistry honors students learned the elements and compounds. They studied the delicious element Cadmium in their treats but were restrained from tasting it since it might be radioactive. They then moved on to observe the elements at the excited state and the compounds they made - ionic or covalent. They were so thrilled to establish a conductivity test as a criterion for ionic compounds that provide electrolytes in our daily diet essential to maintaining the health of our body.

Mr. Nyhuis stopped by to view the annual Forensic Science In-School Crime Scene Investigation field trip. Students in Dr. Walters and Mrs. Stucke's forensic science classes processed a crime scene during the week of November 11th. Just like in a real crime scene, each group had to perform tasks such as photographing the crime scene, measuring and sketching the crime scene, as well as collecting evidence.

The Latin Academic Teams traveled to Yale for their first national level in-person competition of the year. Each team battled against several other teams from other states and high schools around the country. The competition was very fun, and they enjoyed a beautiful day to walk around the campus of Yale University and the college town of New Haven in between competition rounds. This was the first time that the BF 8th grade team joined their high school peers for the Yale tournament, and all were happy to have them along!

RHS student Caroline Kiernan has been named one of 10 finalists in Seton Hall University’s Pirates Pitch Competition. Selected from over 225 young entrepreneurs, Caroline will pitch her idea, Stress Less, TODAY, Friday, November 22 at approximately 3:40 PM at Seton Hall. Connect to the live stream contest to support Caroline!
Stress Less was originally conceived as a DECA project last school year by Caroline and her business partner, Taline Sarajian. The girls are now working on turning that idea into a real company and product. This competition would assist them with that goal. Pitch contestants will face off in a Shark Tank-style competition and are eligible to qualify for start-up money and potential scholarships to Seton Hall. You're encouraged to watch the live stream, as there is also a $300 prize for the Audience Choice Award.
*A special thanks to Sean Kase who encouraged Caroline to pursue this competition!

Ridgewood High School’s French Club hosted a meeting on November 14, 2024. The club started working on decorations to redo a wall in Madame Donovan’s classroom! Members made small French flags which will be used for a border. The club is planning many other crafts to finish off the wall. Future crafts include a banner, a paper glass window, and a cardboard Eiffel Tower. If you enjoy making crafts, come to Room 332 every other Wednesday.
