In the Classroom
In studying electromagnetism, physics students were captivated by the innovative Maglev trains operating in Japan and China. These cutting-edge trains utilize magnetic levitation, sparking students' curiosity about the underlying principles of electromagnetism. The students participated in interactive activities to deepen their understanding, including balancing acts on a levitating globe in the classroom, building electromagnets, and competing to see how many paperclips their electromagnets could hold. Finally, the students engaged in an activity that generated electricity using their physical strength. This exercise gave them a tangible sense of how electricity is produced and helped them appreciate the journey electricity takes from power plants to their households allowing them to visualize the effects and highlight the practical applications of electromagnetism.
