Fun with Chemistry!
It was the time of the year when chemistry students studied the delicious element Candium but restrained from tasting it since it might be radioactive. They then moved on to study compounds - ionic or covalent. They were so excited to establish a conductivity test as a criterion for ionic compounds that provide electrolytes. Using a miniature device, they proved sports drinks, whether green, red, or clear, are sources of electrolytes that are essential to maintaining the health of our body.

The trout were already starting to hatch from their eggs when they arrived
After one week, the yolk sacs of the trout are too heavy for the trout to swim properly
Rainbow Trout have arrived in the Classroom
The Green Club has long been preparing a fish tank in Mr. Luo's classroom to participate in the State's Trout in the Classroom program. More than one hundred rainbow trout eggs were delivered to the school on October 24th, and almost all of the eggs have hatched! Riley Burke has led a group of students to regularly test the water quality of the tank to ensure the best environment for trout survival. Rainbow trout need cold water conditions to survive, and habitats with these characteristics have become increasingly rare in northern New Jersey. By creating an environment mimicking these conditions, the Green Club is hoping to release finger-sized trout into the Saddle River in late spring. Stay tuned for our progress in raising these popular fish!
Members of the Green Club regularly test the water quality to ensure we are providing the proper coldwater environment for the young trout.

Kateryna Morhunmorh Zooming with students
Daniel Hept, Brady Ross, Timothy McCabe, Toby Oddy, Alexander Han, Andrew Muhepteller
Applied Engineering Club members are taking leadership roles in forming 17 teams to invent with helping community, sustainability, and combating climate change as their focus. It is remarkable to see students’ empathy and desire to help others spark creativity and thinking outside the box to solve problems. Team LifeGun continues to put their ideas into practice by zooming in with mentor Kateryna Morhun (RHS'22) at MIT, who enthusiastically shared her expertise as Alexander Mueller (RHS’23) did. Team Sound Energy and Team DynaCharge want to generate electricity from alternative sources. Team 5 is experimenting with making editable plastic alternatives. Team 2 wants to invent a “Self-sustainable Adaptive Buoy” for monitoring lakes. Teams 3 and 13 are developing APPs for special causes. All teams will enter their videos in the Thomas Edison Pitch Contest and NJSTEAM Tank Challenge in December. Invention culture from innovation to real-world problem-solving lives at RHS!
