Legendary U.S. Goalkeeper Briana Scurry to Speak with Ridgewood High School Students

Two-Time Olympic Gold Medalist, World Cup Champion to speak to students as part of the school’s “Tell Me Your Story” program. Due to tight time constraints and limited seating, the event is not open to the public. Thank you.

On Tuesday, February 6th, students from Ridgewood High School will meet a modern-day celebrity, when US Women’s National Soccer Team pioneer, Hall of Fame goalkeeper, and author Briana Scurry visits the school to share her story of triumph, tragedy, and redemption.

A pioneer on the US Women's National Team, Scurry helped to diversify the sport as one of the first African American professional female soccer players. She again made history when she won gold in 1996, playing in the first-ever women’s Olympic soccer games. She was a key part of the fabled World Cup '99ers and captured her second Olympic gold in 2004, cementing her status as one of the premier soccer players in the world.

However, Scurry's storybook career ended in 2010 when a knee to the head left her with severe trauma. Labeled "temporarily totally disabled," she was unable to work, incapacitated by pain, and spiraled into depression and debt so bad she pawned her gold medals. It seemed like the only way out until Scurry made her greatest save of all.

Funded through a grant from the Ridgewood Education Foundation, Scurry’s visit coincides with Black History Month and will explore her memoir, My Greatest Save. The book is one of this year's selections for students in grades 9-12 as part of the school’s “Tell Me Your Story” initiative, a school-wide book group for the English Language Arts Department that strives to increase empathy and understanding through shared memoir reading.

Alpine Races

After several postponed races, the Alpine Racing Team has a lot to be psyched about. Their first race of the season was the East Invitational Slalom during a rainy and foggy evening at Mountain Creek.  The women’s team earned 2nd place, with Riley Burke and Sol Tepper placing in the top 10 individual scores.  The men’s team earned 4th place, with Jacob Marcovici placing 2nd.

Two days later, the rain had stopped but the fog had rolled back over the mountain during a Conference Race. In soft snow conditions and very low visibility, the women’s team placed 5th. Sol and Riley continued their top ten finishes with Sol placing 4th and Riley placing 5th.  The men’s team also overcame the difficult conditions with a 3rd place team result.  And the winning individual time was raced by RHS senior Jacob Marcovici!

Looking forward to cold winter temperatures for the upcoming races!
