Author Candace Fleming Visits RHS!
Award-winning author Candace Fleming visited Ridgewood High School on Tuesday, March 3, engaging students in both a large-group presentation in the Little Theatre and a hands-on writing workshop. She is visiting all schools in the district from March 2-11.
Fleming is the author of more than 50 books for children and young adults, including the 2026 YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction Award-winning Death in the Jungle, the 2025 Robert F. Sibert Honor title Enigma Girls, and the 2021 YALSA Award-winning The Rise and Fall of Charles Lindbergh. Recently, she won the 2026 American Library Association’s Children's Literature Legacy Award honoring an author or illustrator, published in the United States, whose books have made a significant and lasting contribution to literature for children.
She spoke about the craft of writing, the research process, and the importance of structure, voice, and revision. Her presentation offered students an inside look at how ideas evolve from initial inspiration to published work. In addition to the assembly, Fleming led a focused writing workshop, guiding students through the process of developing and refining their own pieces.
Thank you to the RHS HSA for their support and generous donation, which helped make this visit possible.

Students in Career Pathways in Medicine (CPM II) welcomed guest speaker, Alexa Darakjy, Esq., GEICO defense attorney, to explore the intersection of healthcare and the law.
Drawing from her experience in personal injury and medical-related litigation, she walked students through landmark legal cases that have shaped modern medical practice. She also discussed major current cases in the news, including the national settlements involving Johnson & Johnson, and how pharmaceutical litigation impacts physicians, healthcare systems, and patient safety.
This presentation reinforced the connection between medicine and ethics and exposed students to career pathways that support healthcare beyond clinical practice. We are grateful for her time and for challenging students to think critically about the responsibilities that accompany a career in medicine!
Nanotechnology - It is a Small World After All!
Students in Honors Chemistry dove into the exciting world of nanotechnology, exploring recent advances in material science and their powerful applications in water treatment, information technology, and nanomedicine for targeted drug delivery. Inspired by nature’s designs, they then fabricated nanotechnology-based solar cells using blackberry juice—transforming sunlight into electricity!
Each group meticulously followed the experimental procedures and watched with amazement as their handmade cells generated measurable voltage and current. The room buzzed with excitement as students witnessed firsthand how chemistry, innovation, and nature intertwine to create real-world solutions. A thrilling reminder that chemistry - It is a small world after all!
They will exhibit the solar cells at Super Science Saturday on March 7th.
Students in Forensics Learned how to Take Fingerprints
In Physics CP, students brought electricity to life by building both series and parallel circuits and mastering how to complete them. To celebrate the unit, they used Makey Makey boards to turn their circuits into instruments—connecting with friends through the flow of current and playing favorite tunes, even Beethoven’s Ninth, on a playful playdough piano. Their creativity, collaboration, and musical talents truly shone, and they’re excited to share this electrifying fun with young learners at Super Science Saturday!
