Answer the questions
How many students wear a baseball cap (jeans, a T-shirt)?
What colours are popular?
Why do they wear it (them)?
Listen to these three people talking about fashion. Name all the items of clothing they mention.
Tim:
“I like wearing baggy sportswear because I spend a lot of time on my skates. I’m wearing a hooded top and a baseball cap. I usually wear itthe other way round. There are some of my friends who like clothes with a label, but I always put sport before fashion. The most important thing is that I feel comfortable in the clothes I wear. I have always wanted to have a leather jacket but I haven’t bought one, because they are rather expensive.”
Josh:
“I have never been interested in fashion. Clothes are clothes. I hate going shopping so I’m happy with whatever I get from my mum or sister. I really can’t understand why there’s so much fuss about these expensive clothes — I’d rather buy a book or a playstation game. I bought one last week and I’m broke now. This tracksuit top I’m wearing now is a birthday present from my sister. I got it last year.”
Brenda:
“Well, I’m wearing a school uniform, as you can see. This is so boring. I choose clothes I want to buy, but I always go shopping with my mum. She’s not always happy with what I pick, so we sometimes argue. She doesn’t always give in. Last year I earned some money babysitting for my neighbours, so I bought a fake fur jacket and a glittery shirt. I wear them when I go to parties. The last thing I got as a present is a choker. My brother said a dog collar would be better.”
Read the question and prove your mind talking for 30 seconds.
You prefer going shopping alone. Why?
You’ve never been interested in fashion. Why?
You like wearing sport style clothes. Why?
You are happy only if you have a lot of money. Why?
You usually go shopping with your Mom. Why?
You can’t stand wearing classical style of clothes. Why?
You prefer buying a new game/book more than new clothes. Why?
You are happy to spare time with your friends. Why?
Shopping online is a good idea. Why?
Your Mom always makes you to wear a fur cap in winter. Why?
You like going to clubs /cafes more than being at home. Why?
You are a member of one of informal youth groups. Why?
You prefer shopping in big shop centres /malls. Why?
You enjoy wearing free style in your clothes. Why?
You can have a lot of fun without having to spend much money. Why?
Rappers are better than other groups. Why?

Read the interview and match the answers (page 37) to the questions and the reporter’s phrases
1. Reporter: London Fashion Week has just finished and you’ve been named the most promising fashion design student. Why have you come to study fashion design in London?
Young fashion design student: Well, London is the right place to be because it’s famous for its street fashion and a lot of second-hand shops or markets - so young people can buy cheap clothes and create their own style.
2. Reporter: How do these styles differ from each other?
Young fashion design student: Some young people have money and they spend quite a lot of it on clothes. They like wearing smart clothes, loafers, tight fitting sportswear. They like riding scooters. Their hair is well groomed and they have regular haircuts.
3. Reporter: I see...
Young fashion design student: But there are more and more people who like wearing comfortable clothes. They are more in touch with the natural world. They think that today’s world revolves too much around money.
4. Reporter: But there are also some strange looking guys.
Young fashion design student: Yeah, of course. Some young people like dying their hair in bright colours. In big cities they are also connected with punk and rave.
5. Reporter: So you are saying that there is a strong connection between fashion and music.
Young fashion design student: Yes. Fashion and music have always been connected. Let’s say heavy metal is associated with leather jackets, long hair, tattoos, powerful motorbikes. While Punk was famous for a lot of strange accessories like chains, safety pins, and of course spiky hair, Rap goes together with baggy clothes.
6. Reporter: What do you personally like?
Young fashion design student: Well, comfortable clothes ... with style
7. Reporter: What’s your favourite shopping place in London?
Young fashion design student: Camden Lock Market. You can get anything you want there — fake Levi’s, leopard print swimsuits, old records, jewellery made from recycled metal. It attracts an amazing mixture of people, so it’s fun just watching them. I often get inspired there.
8. Reporter: What fashion advice would you give to our young listeners?
Young fashion design student: Well, I’d say a person’s style depends on the imagination, not that much on money. I really believe in creating a style that doesn’t cost much. Fashion should be more on the artistic side. Today it is still a big business.
9. Reporter: Thank you very much. It was nice talking to you
Say if the following statements are true or false
1. Fashion and music are often connected.
2. Some people dye their hair in strange colours.
3. Camden Lock Market is a place where one can buy second-hand clothes.

a) a person who keeps promises.
b) a person who will become very successful.
2. Second-hand shops are the ones that
a) are not close to your home.
b) sell clothes that somebody else has already worn.
3. Fashion is a big business. It means
a) that there are a lot of fashion designers in this business.
b) that there is a lot of money in it

Тo be healthy we must have a healthy lifestyle and avoid bad habits.
-- What good person’s habits can you name? (Doing morning exercises, going in for
sport, walking, having a good rest, eating a healthy food …)
-- What bad habits can a person have? (Smoking, drinking alcohol, using drugs …)
Smoking is a big problem all over the world. Especially smoking is spread among the teenagers. They often take their first cigarette to look grown-up and cool. But they forget that it is a very bad for their health.
In 1870 the British Government adopted a law: every packet of cigarette must have a health warning on it. Now we have such a law in Ukraine. But very often a great number of modern advertisements show us beautiful girls or boys who smoke. And many teenagers want to imitate them. There are some rules, which don’t allow people to smoke in public places, such as cinemas, theatres, public transport etc. but people still smoke when and where they want. I think it is a great problem and we must do our best to stop spreading cigarettes.
Task 1. Suppose we are to make an anti-smoking poster. We’ll take a picture of a beautiful girl and try to warn her about the danger of smoking. Match the English sentences with their Ukrainian equivalents.
THE TRUTH ABOUT SMOKING WILL JUST KILL YOU
1. It impairs your vision
2. It takes your breath away and gives you emphysema
3. It causes lung cancer and cancer of the throat
4. It turns your teeth and fingers yellowand gives you ugly skin
5. It makes your breath stink and your hair and clothes smell awful
6. It wastes your time and empties your pockets
7. It pollutes the air around you and makes your non-smoking friends avoid you
8. It ruins your sex appeal
9. It makes you smell like an old ashtray
Text 2.
Reasons to Give Up Smoking
1. Answer the questions:
Does anyone of your relatives or friends smoke?
What do you think of smoking and people who smoke?
Do you like the street boards with the cigarette advertisement?
Do you know anything about “passive smoking“?
Do you know that there is a law forbidding smoking in public places? Is it necessary?
2. Read the text which may contain interesting information for you.
The consequences of smoking may seem very far off to many teens, but long-term health problems aren't the only hazard of smoking. Nicotine and the other toxins in cigarettes, cigars, and pipes can affect a person's body quickly, which means that teen smokers experience many of these problems:
Bad skin. Smoking can prevent oxygen and nutrients from getting to the skin – which is why smokers often appear pale and unhealthy.
Bad breath.
Bad-smelling clothes and hair. The smell of stale smoke tends to linger - not just on people's clothing, but on their hair, furniture, and cars.
And it's often hard to get the smell of smoke out.
Reduced athletic performance. People who smoke usually can't compete with nonsmoking peers because the physical effects of smoking - like rapid heartbeat, decreased circulation, and shortness of breath - impair sports performance.
Greater risk of injury and slower healing time. Increased risk of illness. Studies show that smokers get more colds, flu, bronchitis, and
pneumonia than nonsmokers. And people with certain health conditions, like asthma, become more sick if they smoke (and often if they're just around people who smoke). Because teens who smoke as a way to manage weightoften light up instead of eating, their
bodies lack the nutrients they need to grow, develop, and fight off illness properly.
WE WANT TO BE IN CONTROL OF OUR LIFE
WE MUST BE ALL WE CAN BE IN THIS LIFE
WE CHOOSE LIFE WITHOUT CIGARETTES, ALCOHOL AND DRUGS.

Development of Youth Culture
Youth culture truly developed in the 20th century when it became more common for teenagers to gather together. Historically, before this time many teens spent a lot of time with adults (parents or relatives) or smaller kids. Compulsory schooling and other changes in the society made the joint socialization of teenagers more usual.
The term "youth culture" refers to the ways that teenagers lead their lives. Youth culture can belong to interests, styles, behaviours, music, beliefs, vocabulary, clothes, sports and dating. The concept behind youth culture is that these groups are a subculture with norms, behaviours and values that differ from the main culture of older generations in the society.
Commonly-used youth culture examples are:
wearing clothes that indicates freedom or fashion-consciousness;
hairstyles such as brightly colored hair, spiked hair, shaved heads;
behaviour that is awful for parents, such as drinking, smoking, using drugs;
a change in academic performance (marks at school) in order to conform to their groups;
a change in types of media that the teenager prefers, i.e. comic books over novels or magazines over non-fiction;
view changes about school, religion or family;
a change in the way that they treat others.
So were the punkers, the mods, the rockers. This isn't a new phenomena.
This is how it has always been and how it will always be.
1.Youth culture developed as a result of changes in the society.
2.Adolescents could work and had their own money to spend in those days. 1 F 2NM 3 T
3.A subculture is a part of the main culture.
4.If a teenager joins in any subculture, parents can't notice it.
5.All subcultures have the same concept.
6.The first youth groups were very active in social life.
7.Mass media and the newest gadgets affect the life of teenagers.
8.Youth groups of today are more active than earlier generations.

One of the problems that people think of when they hear about the future of the Internet is "Too much information." They think that the Internet will be a mountain of data, and that the mountain will fall on them. But "too much information" is not a new problem, and it's not a problem that we only have with computers. Think about books for a minute. When you go to a library, do you worry about reading all the books there? No, of course not. You know what you are interested in. You know what you want to read. And the library system helps you find it.
The Internet has filters. A filter helps you choose the information you want. Tomorrow's filters will be better than today's- If you are interested in football, your computer will show you the winners of the football games first when you ask it about sports. Of course, you'll have to tell it things first. The filter will work better if it knows more about you.
Today's computers are like first-day workers. You have to give careful orders about everything. And these computers will always be first-day workers. They cannot learn from you.
A filter that knows a lot about you can learn. It will remember what you're good at. It will remember what you like and don't like. And it will try to help you in other ways.
Because filters will learn, they will also change. When a filter becomes very smart, we call it an "agent." It will even have a voice. Some people don't like the idea of talking to a computer. "It's too strange," they say. But we talk to machines already.
When your car or your computer doesn't work, you shout at it. We shout at things all the time. Now, instead of shouting, we will be able to talk. But most of this won't happen for several years. Building the future Internet - the Information Highway - will be a big job. The system will have to work with many different kinds of computers and other information machines, too. And it will be expensive to build. But building it has begun already. The Internet is a group of computers that share information. The Internet is already here, and it is the most important new idea in the computer business since the personal computer.
The Internet uses the telephone systems. When I send you a message, it goes from my computer to the telephone, and then from there to my Internet company. Then my company sends it to your Internet company, and your company sends it to
The Internet is a wonderful system but it has some problems. One of the most serious problems is hackers, people who know a lot about computers and use this to get into other people's computer systems. On November 2,1988, thousands of computers using the Internet began to slow down. Many of them just stopped- Companies lost work hours and money. The reason for the trouble was a program that a hacker put into the system several months before.
But most of the time, the Internet works smoothly. Millions of people are using it today, and they are happy with it.
Another change for the Internet is coming, too. Soon you will see movies on your television or on your computer screen because you chose them. These movies will come from cable television companies. Cable television and telephone companies will fight to get you as a customer for the things they offer: movies, banking, shopping, etc.
The personal computer has helped people in many ways. The Internet will do more; it will open the doors to most of the world’s information.
1. State whether these statements are true or false (T, F)
1) One of the problems that people think of when they hear about the future of the Internet is "Too little information.
2) The Internet has filters. A filter helps you to avoid contaminated sites and files.
3) The Internet uses the telephone systems.
4) Not so many people are using the Internet today.
5) The Internet rarely works smoothly.
2. Put : can (to be able to) and must.
1) The VCR is a machine that makes a copy of movies or TV shows so that you ____watch them later or even keep them.
2) Now you ______ choose when you want to watch something on TV.
3) Today's computers are like first-day workers. You ________ give careful orders about everything. And these computers will always be first-day workers. They _______ learn from you.
4) A filter that knows a lot about you _________ learn.
5) In the future there will be television as there is now, but there will also be television through the computer. You ________ watch anything that has already been on TV, at any time you want.

d) someone who talks all the time
e) someone who can’t live without football
f) someone who doesn’t eat meat

Thomas: I know I’m a chatterbox. I talk too much and it’s so hard for me to keep secrets. I’m a bit gossipy. Still, I have a lot of friends. How is it possible?
Ron: I have two best friends. Benny is a bit bossy but he is a good friend. I can rely on him. I know that if I have a problem or get in trouble, he will help me. Dave is very quiet. Not a bit selfish. Everybody likes him.
Andrew: My best friend is Ian. He’s such fun. We have so much in common. We are both football fans, we hate heavy metal and love SF films. It’s never boring with him. Besides, we understand each other very well.
Carla: Gemma is my best friend. I love her because she is so interesting and fun. We share things. We even wear each other’s clothes. My sister says we are stupid. But she is a health freak. You know, she does exercise, is a vegetarian, goes to bed early and ... always complains about me. Boring, isn’t she?
Phil: I don’t know what a good friend is because I don’t have any. The TV and my computer are my best friends. My parents are angry at me. They call me a couch potato because I spend so much time in front of the TV set. They say I should go out and find myself a friend. The truth is I don’t know how to make friends. My classmates call me a computer wizard and they say they admire me. Still, they never invite me to their parties or call me out. I’m very unhappy about that, but I don’t show it. You know, nothing can take the place of a friend, not even a computer or a TV set.

Read the sample of autobiography
I was born on a cold winter night in my native Bennington, Oklahoma. I do not remember much of my early childhood, but my mum said that I was a very active, curious, and communicative child. I would ask dozens of questions each minute, even without waiting for the answers. I suppose that was why my parents offered me books and educational movies as early as my third birthday.
Fortunately, my thirst for knowledge did not come to an end when I was at school. I was fond of history and science. This passion helped me gain good knowledge in these areas. Today, I am a student at a law school, and I feel very happy about it.
I am certain that my good results in studies will become my ticket to a better tomorrow. I want to become a lawyer. I study hard and devote my free time to reading reviews and watching interviews with recognized specialists in the field.
Of course, I understand that life is not just a bed of roses, and challenges or difficulties are an integral element of life. Since my parents could not help me cover my college expenses in full, I combine a part-time job and full-time study to earn my living and my education. I feel satisfied at the beginning of every month when I receive my salary and plan how I will spend my money.

· Excuse me for disturbing you.

· Clark denies having done it. – Кларк заперечує, що він це зробив.

Call me Archibald. My real name isn’t important. In this blog I want to share my ideas with other kids my age. It isn’t always easy to talk to our parents or even friends. I’m sure you understand me.
Here is some information about myself. I’m 14 years old. I play water polo. I go to the swimming pool every day except at the weekend. I’m a good swimmer and player although I’m not very tall or very strong. I’m also interested in photography. I use my dad’s small digital camera. It takes great pictures. I’ve got lots of photos of my friends (of one classmate especially!). I read books about superheroes like Superman. I’m not a superhero myself but I hate injustice and I’d like to have some special powers, too.
I haven’t got any brothers or sisters. My parents work hard and spend a lot of time at work, so I’m often alone at home. My mum’s a teacher. She prepares for school and she always talks about her pupils. I sometimes get upset because maybe she thinks they’re better than me. My mum says that Pete is such a good pupil. I think he reads my blog. My dad’s a mechanic and he fixes cars. He tells jokes all the time and he is never serious. He thinks he has a sense of humour but his jokes aren’t always funny!
I have a pet parrot. His name is James. He’s got a cage in my room but he rarely stays in it. He usually flies around. He is friendly but he isn’t polite; he hasn’t got good manners. He never uses the toilet! He also bites computer cables and sometimes my finger!
E-mail me!
