The Tiger Who Came to Tea
(Adopted from “The Tiger Who Came to Tea” by Judith Kerr)
Useful Words
grocery – бакалія
bun - булка
tin - консервна банка
tap - кран з водою
beer - пиво
Do you like to have guests for tea?
Read the text and translate it.
Once there was a little girl Sophi, who was having tea with her Mummy. Suddenly there was a ring at the door. Sophi’s Mummy said: “I want to know who can it be. It can’t be a milkman, because he came this morning. And it can’t be the boy from the grocery, because it isn’t the day he comes. And it can’t be Daddy, because he has got his keys. We open the door and see.” Sophi opened the door and there was a big furry stripy tiger. The tiger said: “Excuse me, but I am very hungry. I think I can have tea with you.”
Sophi’s Mummy said: “Of course. Come in.”
So the tiger came into the kitchen and sat down at the table. Sophi’s Mummy said: “Would you like a sandwich?”
The tiger didn’t take one sandwich, but he took a plate with sandwiches and ate them all. And he still looked hungry. So Sophi passed him the buns. And the tiger didn’t eat one bun, but he ate all the buns on the dish. And then he ate all the biscuits and all the cakes. There was nothing to eat on the table. So Sophi’s Mummy said: “Would you like a drink?” The tiger drank all the milk in the milk jug and all the tea in the teapot. And then he looked round the kitchen to see what else he could find. He ate all the supper in the saucepans and all the food in the fridge. And all the packets and tins in the cupboard. And he drank all the milk and all the orange juice, and all Daddy’s beer, and all the water in the tap. Then he said: “Thank you for my nice tea. But I must go now.” And he went.
Sophi’ s Mummy said: “I don’t know what to do. I have nothing for Daddy. The tiger ate all the supper.” And Sophi found that she couldn’t have her bath, because the tiger drank all the water in the tap.
Just then Sophi’s Daddy came home. Sophi and her Mummy told him about a strange visitor. The tiger ate all the food and drank all the drink. Daddy said: “I know what to do. I have got an idea. Put your coats on and let’s go to the café.”
So they went down the dark street. They walked down the road to the café. And they had a Lovely supper with chips and ice-cream.
In the morning Sophi and her Mummy went shopping. And they bought lots more things to eat. And they also bought a big tin of tiger food. In case the tiger comes to tea again.

Watching interesting or favorite movies in English will not only make a few new selected phrases “stick” in your memory but will also help you associate learning English with positive emotions, which is very important if you want to stay motivated in the long run.
Vocabulary related to movies will also come in handy if you want to talk about a movie
It doesn’t matter what kind of movies you like
You might be into funny romantic comedies.
Or dynamic action movies.
Or thrillers that take your breath away.
Using the workbook for the movie, you expand your vocabulary and, if you want, prepare answers to the questions we will discuss. And then we get together (online) and talk about the movie.
If you want to have an enjoyable and thought-provoking conversation but lack the vocabulary on the topic, I have prepared a small set of cards and a mind map with essential vocabulary that will help you discuss movies in English.

Do ex.11,12, p.39 say your opinion about your feelings ex.9
Why do you use the Internet?
How much time do you spend online every day?
What are your favourite social networks and online games?
Page 38 Task 1 Listen to the talk show.
The Host: Good evening! The topic of our chat show tonight is new technology and children. I’m happy to welcome Mrs Goldring who is a school psychologist, Mr Boyd who comes from the game industry, 11-year old Emma from Bush Comprehensive school and Mrs Fisher one of many worried parents. What do you say to that Mrs Goldring?
Mrs Goldring, the psychologist: A lot of parents come to me with that problem. Being online can be dangerous. I believe the most important thing is to talk about it.
The Host: What do you think, Emma? You spend at least 2 hours on the computer every day.
Emma: Yes, it’s a lot of fun. The Internet helps me with learning and doing my homework. I also use it for downloading music and watching video clips. I know I mustn’t give out any personal information or post a photo. I also know I mustn’t meet up with anyone I meet online.
The Host: How do you know these things?
Emma: We talk about it with our teachers at school. My parents also keep repeating it. At school we mustn’t join any of the chat rooms, anyway.
The Host: Do you play games?
Emma: Yes, I do, but not online.
The Host: What do you say, Mr Boyd?
Mr Boyd, the video games seller: However, there are some very good games that make you think faster or that teach you new skills. Some teachers use them in their History, Science or Maths classes.
Mrs Goldring, the psychologist: I think the problem is that children spend too much time gaming, and they don’t hang out with other children. In that way they don’t know how to talk about their feelings, or they don’t know how to solve problems they have with other children. Sitting alone in a room isolates you from the real world, from your friends and family. That’s a bit worrying.
The Host: Thank you very much. Now, let’s have a look at the comments viewers are sending in.
Read the sentences below. Listen to the talk show again and say what they didn’t mention.
1. Spending a lot of time on the Internet is not good for your body and eyes.
2. Doing things online can sometimes be dangerous.
3. Using social networks helps you contact people from other countries.
4. Some games can make you very aggressive.
5. Sitting alone in front of your computer isolates you from your friends and family.
Answer the questions below.
1. What does Emma use a computer for?
2. What does Mr Boyd say?
3. Does Mrs Goldring agree with him?
Read the text and write if the statements below are true (T) or false (F).
1. Being online is not always safe.
2. Emma spends at least 1 hour on her computer.
3. The Internet helps Emma to work and communicate with others.
4. Emma mustn't post any photos or meet up with anyone online.
5. Emma's parents and teachers talk to her about Internet safety.
6. There are no online games that can make you think faster.
7. Children today spend more time online than live with each other.

English is one of the school subjects I like the best. Our English teacher trains us in good pronunciation, reading, listening and speaking. She teaches us to take interviews at sport conversations. I like role play and project work very much. I think that spelling is the most difficult point in learning foreign languages. This year we have started to make first steps in composition and discussion. I’m lucky to have an American ping-pong. It helps to practice my English better. I’m interested in visiting some English speaking counties. I hope to use English in my future job. I am fond of English and American literature and culture. I like to read books by English writers.
1. In what way does the English teacher train her students?
2. What does she teach them in English lessons?
3. What is the most difficult point in learning foreign languages?
4. What new steps have the students started this year?
5. What is the student interested in? Why?
6. What is he fond of?
Read some children’s opinions about their school subjects.
Alison:
The last lessons of the day are History and Maths. History is really boring, lots of reading and writing, of course. Besides, I think that everything was discovered1 before us. It’s no use studying History, but Maths is really great!
Ted:
I’d like to be a pilot and work for an air-taxi firm. I study very hard. I study Geography, History and Maths hard because of my future profession. I don’t use only textbooks. I read a lot of magazines and history books, too.
George:
Everything is boring at school. I think there’s no use in it at all. I can get any information I need from books and the Net. Usually I spend my time doing experiments at my father’s lab. I can perform lots of fantastic experiments there. It’s really interesting!
Andrew:
Today, in the middle of the boring Mathematics lesson, I started yawning. Miss Walsh looked at me just at that moment. What did she do? She told me to learn one page from our Maths book by heart! And I wasted three hours on that nonsense!

We use ‘MUST’ and ‘HAVE TO’ to:
— describe obligation or necessity:
You must listen to your teacher. (obligation)
He has to go to hospital. (necessity)
— express prohibition:
You mustn’t drive fast. (prohibition)
‘HAVE TO’ means that someone else decides: Students have to wear a uniform.
‘MUST’ means that I decide: I must work.
We use ‘SHOULD’ for advice:
It’s raining. You should take your umbrella with you.
You must stop using swear words — Ти повинен припинити використовувати лайливі слова. (Зобов'язання, що йде від мовця. Мовець думає, що це необхідно).
You have to start work at 9 a.m. — Ти повинен починати роботу о 9 ранку. (Зовнішнє зобов'язання. Хтось інший думає, що це необхідно).
1. You have to wear a clean uniform at school.
2. Students mustn’t be late for their lessons.
3. You don’t have to bring your lunch to school — there is a school café.
4. Students have to read this book for tomorrow’s lesson.
5. I don’t know how to do this task. You should ask the teacher for help.
6. Sam has got a headache. He shouldn’t go to school today.
7. Bill and Jack sing very well. They should join the school choir.
8. Adam rides his bike to school. He shouldn’t ride it very fast.
Modal verbs show possibility, intent, ability, or necessity. Common examples of modal verbs include can, should, and must. Because they're a type of auxiliary verb (helper verb), they're used alongside the infinitive form of the main verb of a sentence. https://cambridge.ua/uk/blog/all-about-modal-verbs/

Основна інформація
Це початковий пункт твору, в якому ви вітаєте слухачів/читачів і коротко говорите про себе найважливіші речі. Як правило, це ім’я і прізвище, вік, місто та країна проживання. Складання такої короткої розповіді про себе англійською займає окремий абзац, що включає всього пару-трійку пропозицій. Написати його нескладно, але все ж для кожного стилю оповідання є свої особливості. Тому наведемо кілька вступних фраз для розповіді про себе англійською мовою з перекладом.
