Task 1 Read about Christmas.
CHRISTMAS DAY
Christmas is a religious holiday which brings many families and friends together. People decorate their homes and the main decoration is the Christmas tree. They put different electric lights, glass balls and bells on it. Parents also secretly put presents for their kids under it.
In the evening, many people go to church to honour Jesus Christ, as this is his birthday.
They also sing a lot of Christmas songs called "carols". Families have a festive dinner together and children can finally open their presents. However, kids can give their parents some presents too, as this is the time of "giving", not only "taking".

The 1st day of winter for ancient Greeks was December the 21st or 22nd.
The Romans began their year first on March the 1st, then changed the calendar to January the1st.
In France in ancient times a king made Easter the first day of a year.
Even today, many people celebrate the 1st day of the year on different dates.
The Jewish New Year is between September the 5th and October the 5th.
In Iran, the New Year begins on March the 21st.
The Chinese living outside China celebrate the old Chinese New Year between January the 21st and February the 19th.
Long ago the only “calendar” people had was the moon, the sun, the stars and the seasons.
The calendar we use today isn’t the only kind of calendar.
Do you know about the Chinese calendar, for example? It divides the years into groups of 12. Each year has got a name of an animal.

Минулий простий час Past Simple
Час Past Simple позначає дії, які відбувалися або не відбувалися в повсякденному житті в минулому.
Ознаками цього часу є такі слова і словосполучення: yesterday (учора), last month (минулого місяця), last week (минулого тижня), long ago (давно), а minute ago (хвилину тому) тощо.
She went to the shop every day. Вона ходила до крамниці щодня.
He didn't call me yesterday. Він не зателефонував мені вчора.
We often bought bananas. - Ми часто купували банани.
They didn't go to London last year. Вони не їздили до Лондона
торік.
Минулий простий час утворюється двома способами:
1) Для правильних дієслів
Минулий час утворюється шляхом додавання закінчення -ed.
He wanted coffee. Він хотів кави.
При утворенні минулого часу для правильних дієслів слід дотримуватися таких правил:
а) Якщо дієслово закінчується на -у, якій передує приголосна, то -у замінюється на -i (+ed).
Приклад:
to study ['stʌdi]-studied ['stʌdid]
to try [trai] - tried [traid]
b) Якщо дієслово закінчується на -у, якій передує голосна, то -у залишається (+ed).
Приклад:
to enjoy - enjoyed
с) Якщо дієслово закінчується на приголосну, якій передує короткий наголошений голосний звук, то ця приголосна по- двоюється (+ed).
Приклад:
to stop [stop] - stopped [stopt]
d) Якщо дієслово закінчується на німе -е, то додається лише -d.
Приклад:
to like [laik] - liked [laikt]
2) Для неправильних дієслів
Потрібно подивитися форму дієслова в другій колонці таблиці неправильних дієслів. Таблицю слід вивчити.
They bought pears. Вони купили груші.
Вправа 1. Перекладіть речення англійською мовою.
1. Вона завжди приходить о шостій. Вона завжди приходила o шостій.
2. Ми хочемо пити. Ми хотіли пити.
3. Вона часто пише листи. Вона часто писала листи.
4. Мій друг іноді їздить до Львова. Мій друг іноді їздив до Львова.
УТВОРЕННЯ ЗАПЕРЕЧЕННЯ
Заперечення утворюється за допомогою допоміжного дієслова did.
Для правильних дієслів
He wanted coffee. Він хотів кави.
He did not want coffee. Він не хотів кави.
He didn't [didnt] want coffee. (коротка форма)
Зверніть увагу на те, що смислове дієслово переходить у теперішній час.
Для неправильних дієслів
They bought pears. Вони купили груші.
They did not buy pears. Вони не купили груші.
They didn't buy pears. (коротка форма)
Зверніть увагу на те, що смислове дієслово переходить у теперішній час.
УТВОРЕННЯ ЗАПИТАННЯ
Питання, як і заперечення, утворюється за допомогою допоміжного дієслова did, яке ставиться на початку речення.
Для правильних дієслів
He wanted coffee. Він хотів кави.
Did he want coffee? - Він хотів кави?
Для неправильних дієслів
They bought pears. - Вони купили груші.
Did they buy pears? - Вони купили груші?
Вправа 2. Перекладіть речення, утворіть питальне й заперечне речення.
1. Том хотів випити сік.
2. Вони зателефонували нам о сьомій.
3. Вона поїхала до Амстердама.
4. Катерина приходила рано вранці.
5. Вони хотіли купити нову квартиру.
Дієслово to be в минулому простому часі
Дієслово to be залежно від числа й особи в минулому простому часі має форми: was/were.
I was
He was
She was
It was
You were
They were
We were
He was a teacher. Він був учителем.
We were friends. Ми були друзями.
УТВОРЕННЯ ЗАПЕРЕЧЕННЯ
Аби утворити заперечне речення, потрібно поставити частку not після дієслова to be в особовій формі (was, were).
He was a teacher. Він був учителем.
He was not a teacher. Він не був учителем.
We were friends. Ми були друзями.
We were not friends. Ми не були друзями.
УТВОРЕННЯ ЗАПИТАННЯ
Аби утворити запитання, потрібно дієслово to be в особовій формі (was, were) поставити на перше місце.
He was a teacher. Він був учителем.
Was he a teacher? - Він був учителем?
We were friends. - Ми були друзями.
Were we friends? - Ми були друзями?
Вправа 3. Перекладіть речення, утворіть питальне й заперечне речення.
1. Вони були в Лондоні у вересні.
2. Книга була на столі.
3. Катерина була вдома.
4. Це був чудовий ранок.
5. Вони були у школі.

What are holidays?
Hi guys! Today I want to talk about holidays.
Many holidays are days when you don’t have to go to school and grown-ups don’t have to go to work. These are often fun-filled days when your family gets together for a big dinner or a picnic. Sometimes there are parades or fireworks.
On some holidays people go to church. The very word ‘holiday’ means a ‘holy day’ — a day on which people thank and honour God. We celebrate all kinds of holidays. Many, such as Christmas and Easter, are religious holidays. Some holidays are the birthdays of famous people, like Taras Shevchenko in Ukraine or George Washington in the USA. Others, such as Independence Day, are the birthdays of the countries. And there are a number of special days like Thanksgiving in the USA and Canada. And there is your very own holiday — your birthday.
Ways of celebration depend on the date, the country, its national traditions and customs.
