It's been a busy - if rather cold! - start to the Spring term.
Last week we began with an INSET day for the staff where we focused on our Christian values and looked forward to our worship theme for this term. In addition we focused on staff well- being both of which are very important to me as Acting Head. The staff also had plenty of space and time to prepare for the children's return the following day. We also covered our staff safeguarding refresher training as we always do at the start of each term.
I was delighted to see all of the children on their first day back and we covered our worship theme for this term, Fruit of The Spirit, in worships over the first two days. This week, children have brought in their best jokes to bring joy as we focus on this area of the fruit of the spirit. We looked that things that bring us joy and the importance of having joy in our hearts.
There have been many things this week that have bought joy to me.I was lucky enough to receive a pack from a very kind person with 365 Bible verses, which is bringing me a lot of comfort and strength, here is the one for today:
For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. Timothy 2 : 3-4
This week we have been settling back into learning routines and I have enjoyed visiting each of the classes with Cheryl Payne to see the wonderful learning that is happening.
Our attendance figures are still something of a worry so please can I remind you all that unless they are exceptional (pre-agreed) circumstances these will be noted on their records as an unauthorised absence. See below for more on our procedures relating to pupil absences, which are expected to be more robust this term in light of our latest attendance statistics.
We have been exploring our lunch time routines in Key Stage Two to help children engage in different activities. We are doing this with Sports and Health Academy and the results are already having an affect on the enjoyment of the children's lunch times. We also had the excitement of a little bit of snow on Monday too! Speaking of which, please send your children in to school with suitable outerwear and footwear in this extremely cold weather.
Next Week:
On Friday there is an Early Years presentation to parents of toddlers and reception age children. This will be led by Tara from Learn To Love To Read.
Also that day lucky Year 2 is off to the Science Museum.
Best wishes for the weekend ahead.

School Streets:
Thank you to all the parent volunteers who kindly stepped up to work the barriers in the mornings and after school.
Now that the six week trial period has come to an end we have been advised by Sustrans (the company that introduced the initiative to us) that we no longer need to man the roads and the signage in the area is very strong. Also, as you will know we have started opening the school gates earlier - at 8:25am - which is serving to remove congestion from the pavements and surrounding areas.
Please make sure you are aware of this change when you travel to and from school as now that there are no barriers it's possible that some drivers won't necessarily adhere to the signage. So normal road safety measures should be taken from now on.
We will keep monitoring this accordingly as the term progresses.
Attendance Matters:
Please remember always to let the office know BY 9AM each day if your child is not going to be in school. Or you can report this via the Parentmail App.
We need a full reason each time for our records please.
Every morning the office staff are having to chase up missing children.
Thank you for your support.
Our target for the year is: 97%
Our attendance for the year to date is: 96.6%
This week our attendance was: 94.9%
Our PTA:
We do hope everyone enjoyed a restful break and is settling in to the new year and term. The PTA are, as ever, busy in the background planning fun and fundraising.
Today we have had our first pre-loved uniform sale of 2024. Thank you to everyone who contributed and volunteered - this is a great and sustainable way to support our school and our families bringing good quality, affordable uniform to everyone, extending the lifespan of clothes and raising money at the same time.
Our Winter Disco has been launched and we are practising our dance moves in readiness for the 27th January. If you haven't already, do book your tickets via https://buytickets.at/ptastmichaels/849742. We also still need school DBS checked volunteers especially for the last disco so if you haven't signed up yet please do get your name down on the volunteer sheet circulated via Whatsapp.
And finally, we have a PTA meeting (online) next Tuesday, 16th, at 7pm. Please do join us if you can - we will be providing an update on finances, communications and asking for your vote on some proposed spending. The agenda was circulated earlier in the week via parentmail or can be found on the PTA website.
The Mayor of London has now confirmed he will be extending the funding for Universal Free School Meals for all primary school age children for another academic year.

New Lunchtime Arrangement:
For many pupils, lunchtime is their favourite and most important part of the day. We, as staff, are very aware of this and therefore have been working hard to restructure the hour to ensure it is calm, safe and enjoyable for our pupils. After listening to feedback from teachers, lunchtime supervisors, school council and other pupils we have created a lunchtime that suits all.
One of the most exciting changes is the introduction of two sport coaches from The Sport and Health Academy. Our three coaches, Josh, Onri and Abukar, will be delivering a range of sport across the lunch hour to all KS2 year groups.
Children will be encouraged to take part in these activities as much as possible to support our goal: 60 active minutes a day. We do however understand that some children may prefer or like the choice to be active creating their own games. For this reason, the playground has been split into zones. In one of these areas the pupils can still take part in unstructured play. Table tennis tables, the outdoor gym equipment, the sensory garden and the climbing frame, all remain available for the children to enjoy.
When collecting feedback from the pupils, many said they wanted an area to draw, read, play board games and chat quietly with friends. For this reason, the Outdoor Classroom is now utilised as a Quiet Zone" to provide pupils with that space to enjoy away from active sport and physical games.
We are aware that the introduction of new initiatives can spark confusion and worry for the pupils, and like with many things, new systems take a while to embed. We are well aware that there could be "teething issues", but we ask for your patience, whilst staff and children familiarise themselves with the new routines.

Walking in the Spirit means living every day
Looking up to Jesus and following His way.

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
