Dear Parents and Carers

We had the pleasure of a visit from our local East Putney police this week who came to talk to the Reception children all about their role in the local area. And the fire brigade and their engine are coming next week! We love partnering with our local community in this way.

Well done to the over 100 pupils who completed the Southfields Library Summer Reading Challenge and thank you to Heather for coming in to present them.

Well done also goes to the sports teams that have done us proud this week - Cross Country on Wednesday and Netball and Football yesterday and today.

Edwards and Ward hosted a special food tasting for Reception parents yesterday and those present were very impressed by the quality and range of food available. The feedback is that for some St Michael's children their school lunch is their favourite part of the day!

Next Week:

...is another busy one, starting off with a special Well-Being assembly on Monday led by Year 6.

There are Black History Month Workshops running from Wednesday to Friday and Year 6 have a WW2 Day on Friday.

The main event of the week of course is our annual Harvest Worship at St Michael's Church on Wednesday which will be led by Megan. As you will know, we are collecting for the Wandsworth Foodbank in the run up to this special pupil-only service. (See below) Thank you in advance for your generosity.

We are so lucky to have so many nooks and crannies where the children (and staff!) can sit, relax, reflect, read and play.

We even have a new woodland walk currently being created by our very clever gardener Mr Wood.

Black History Workshop:

Years 1 -6

We have a series of workshops scheduled next week for Black History Month.

These are taking place on Wednesday 12th October, Friday 14th October and Friday 20th

Please pay £2.60 per child via parentmail.

Phonics Workshop:

Reception and Year 1

Thursday 13th October 2022 at 8.35 am

We will be holding a phonics and reading workshop for our Reception and Year 1 parents and carers. We will open up the reception gate early on this occasion so all children can come into school at 08.30 to allow adults to attend directly after drop-off.

This will be an opportunity for you to learn more about our Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics and reading programme.

We will share a range of resources we use to teach and support your children, as well as offer some advice on how best to support your child/ren at home.

Reading For Pleasure (RFP):

Friday 11th November, 2:30pm

All parents and carers are welcome.

You do not need to be DBS checked to attend this very popular family orientated event.

Please access school via your child's usual entrance.

Siblings can team up with their families and find a quiet space to read together throughout the school grounds.

We are delighted that our attendance record falls well above the government statistics and our current 97.5% attendance is well over the national average:

During week commencing 12 September 2022:

The attendance rate was 94.6% across all schools in the week commencing 12 September 2022. The absence rate was, therefore, 5.4% across all schools.
By school type, the attendance rate across the week was:
95.5% in state-funded primary schools
93.5% in state-funded secondary schools
89.3% in state-funded special school

Air Quality:

Wandsworth Council have now installed a Breathe London Node on Granville Road.

The Air Quality Projects Officer from Wandsworth has explained that:

"the node will monitor Particulate Matter (PM_2.5) and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO₂).

The live data from the node will be shown on the Breathe London website once the node has been configured after its installation."

You may have noticed that we are in the proud possession of a new "no idling' poster on the front gates.

We hope this will discourage drivers from leaving their engines running outside our school.

Jewellery and Watches In School:

Please be reminded that there should be no jewellery in school except for plain stud earrings.

Watches are not permitted in school unless your child is able to tell the time.

You will have a tour of the school and have an opportunity to hear from our Headteacher and some of our pupils.

Our Inclusion:

As all parents know, they are able to make an appointment with the class teacher and/or SENCO to discuss concerns they have about their child's learning and development.

In addition to this The Inclusion Team would like to offer parents quick, drop-in opportunities where they can ask Mrs Harris (Deputy Headteacher, SENCo and Mental Health Lead) questions they have about their child.

These sessions will start on Tuesday 13th September 2022 at 8:30-9am and run each week. If you wish to attend please come to reception after drop off.

At the moment these sessions will be run on a first come first served basis, so there may be a queue.

If necessary we may move to a sign up or booking system but we wanted to see how many parents needed these sessions and how well they are attended.

Football League Match Report

Week 2

Match 1 - The mighty St Michael’s vs Sacred Heart

In our 1st game of week 2 we faced last year's PPSSA champions Sacred Heart. They were a strong team with strong players and had good organisation. It was a cagey game with both teams cancelling each other out. The 2nd part of the game saw both teams create chances with both teams close to the winner. In the end it was a fair result for these evenly matched teams at 0-0.

Match 2 - The mighty St Michael’s vs All Saints

After drawing with Sacred Heart we had to pick ourselves up for the next game. We started the game well and moved the ball well which led to us creating some really good chances. Rocco gave us the lead with a tidy finish. After missing a glorious chance just before Lachie picked up the ball at the edge of the box, flicked it over his head and volleyed it straight into the goal, almost breaking the net. A well earned 2-0 win.

Week 3

Match 1 - The mighty St Michael’s vs Heathmere

They kicked off first this game but that didn’t affect how we played. Soon after Noah scored a great goal which put us one nil up. Surprisingly we scored 2 goals in not a very long time. They were scored by me and Thomas. With all this confidence from the last three goals we were able to score another one scored by Roco. Final score 4-0 to us.

Match 2 - The mighty St Michael’s vs Alton

With all the confidence from the first game gave us a strong start.We were making space and everyone was using this space to make runs or dribble. In no time we scored the first goal scored by James. We then kept in shape and passed around the field which then led us to the second goal scored by me. All our defenders did a good job of when they got a counter attack they put pressure on them. With them having scored no goals this meant that we were able to score another 3, 2 of which were scored by Noah and one by Rocco. This took us to the top of the league by 2 points and with 4 goals more than our nearest rivals. Lets keep this run going into week 4 and 5 to win the league.

St Michael’s netball team have played excellently this season and have continued to help one another grow.

Week on week, they have worked with such precision and skill, always eager to learn and work on their performances.

The team work has been tighter than ever, and for this reason, they have maintained their place at the top of the league, winning it with a clear 5 points.

A truly heroic effort guys, you should super feel proud of yourselves.

Fireworks night - we are once again lighting up Southfields on November 5th! Tickets will go on sale before half term so keep your eyes peeled and diaries marked. We start at 5:30pm and are finished by 7pm so a fun night for all!

PTA AGM - We are so looking forward to our AGM on October 20 at 7:30pm. This meeting is so important as we officially vote in the new committee and let you know all about the exciting year ahead including what our funds are being used for. We realise it's the night before our inset day but would love to see lots of you at the meeting. It's on zoom so you can wear your pj's and no one will know! Details will be circulated by the reps.

Cauliflower cards - orders and art work are due next Wednesday, 12th October. We know it's early but it will be worth it as your cards and other gifts will have plenty of time to be sent to their lucky receivers.

So with diaries marked and craft kits ready, we wish you a happy weekend!
