We've come to the end of the first half of our Autumn Term and so much has happened in the past eight weeks.
As ever it is a joy to see so many families and friends in school sharing the joy of reading at RFP - there are readers in every nook and cranny as I write!
Poppies and other remembrance related items have been available to buy at the end of the school day by our Lead Ambassadors and we will continue this after half term including offering these in the morning at drop off.
After half term there are plenty of events in the calendar, our coffee mornings for each Phase begin with Nursery and Reception on 7th November and Years 5 and 6 on the 8th November 2024.
In addition there are lots of events and festivities in the calendar so do take a look at our Christmas Events schedule for full details:
As we head into the half-term break, I am reminded of these words from the Bible:
“Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” – Galatians 6:9
This passage speaks to the importance of perseverance, resilience, and kindness in all that we do. It is a reminder to us all—children, parents, and staff alike—that our hard work and dedication will bear fruit in time. Let us continue to encourage our children to be kind, diligent, and thoughtful as they learn and grow.
Kirstin Lawrence, who taught in our nursery last year and has been providing PPA cover this half term, will be leaving us as she embarks on the beautiful journey of becoming a parent. We are so grateful for all she has contributed to our school and wish her God’s richest blessings as she enters this new chapter of life. We look forward to welcoming her little one into the St Michael’s family and keeping her in our prayers during this exciting time.
I hope you all enjoy a restful and refreshing break with your families, and I look forward to welcoming everyone back, rejuvenated and ready for the next term.
Wishing you peace and blessings during this half-term holiday.
Warm regards,
Angela Harris
Headteacher

As we reach the end of another busy half-term, I wanted to take a moment to thank everybody who has volunteered this half-term. Below is a quick summary of what we have done together as PTA and what exciting plans are in store after the half-term break!
This half term:
The Year 3 reps kicked off the academic year of fundraising with our first cake sale, raising over £400.
Our creative Year 2 reps transformed the school hall for the Autumn 'Black and White' social, welcoming new parents to the school and allowing us all to let our hair down.
Thanks to everyone for attending our Annual General Meeting last week and saying thank you to Sheila Gough, Lousie Whitehead and Jemima Monies for all their hard work!
Christmas trees will go on sale shortly after the fireworks display, so look out for the link and get ready to decorate yours on Saturday 7th December!
We look forward to tasty treats from the Year 6 reps on Friday 22nd November at our second cake sale of the year.
Finally we will end the term with our three mufti days and school Christmas fair (led by Year 1 reps inside and Year 5 reps outside)
Please remember that when we talk about the PTA, we mean every parent, carer and member of staff at St Michaels CofE School. The PTA is all of us and we simply couldn't do what we do without the support of the class reps, the committee members and you! We still have open roles on the committee. If you want to help us, please reach email us at pta@stmichaels.wandsworth.sch.uk
Please pass on our thanks to all the children, parents, teachers and staff at St Michael's Primary School for your generous Harvest donation to the Wandsworth Food bank. It weighed in at 162.8 kg which we estimate provides 388 meals for our neighbours having a hard time at the moment.
Thank you so much for your continued support!

Christmas Events 2024:
Follow the link to all the exciting Christmas festivities taking place next half term:
World Mental Health Day is a global event held on 10th October each year to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and to encourage open conversations about our emotional well-being. It’s an opportunity for us all to check in with ourselves and others, recognizing the value of talking about our feelings.
At our school, Wellbeing Ambassadors led an assembly, guiding their peers through the “Headache, Highlight, Horizon” activity—exploring challenges, celebrating positives, and looking forward to things ahead.
In addition, they led a conversation with their peers to encourage discussions about emotions and coping strategies. Some of the questions include:
"How are you feeling today?" with a follow-up: "Is there anything that’s making you feel happy or worried?"
"What’s your favourite way to relax when you’re feeling stressed or tired?" with a follow-up: "Do you like to play, draw, or do something else to calm down?"
"Is there anything at school or at home that’s been on your mind lately?" with a follow-up: "Would you like to talk about it?"
These conversations are designed to help children express themselves and build a supportiveenvironment where everyone’s feelings are valued. See some tips below that can help both adults and students look after their wellbeing.

Harvest: 15th October
The St Michael's church team led the whole school in a thoughtful and reflective Harvest Worship time on Tuesday 15th October. The children walked down to the church and sang songs led by Mrs Minster.
The church team shared a message about the importance of taking time to thank God for all good things and sharing with others, Mr Rochford had 3 cream pies in his face, the children learnt a new song and the Pupil Faith Group led a prayer at the end of the service.
We wish to extend a huge thank you to the St Michael's Church team for welcoming us so warmly and for sharing a memorable message and enjoyable time with us.
Thank you to all who sent food in for the Wandsworth Food Bank.
This makes a difference to so many in our community and is a way that we can show thankfulness.
Miss Cunningham.
Summer Reading Challenge
This morning we were delighted to welcome Catherine from Southfields Library to come and present certificates to all the children who took part in the Marvellous Makers Summer Reading Challenge.
We had 98 children from the school sign up to participate and then of those children, 49 children completed the challenge of reading 6 books over the summer holidays.
Well done to all our bookworms who took part!
Cycle Training Level 2:
Well done to our first group of 8 cyclists who have been out on the open road learning their safety skills.
They all passed Level 2 and we have three more sessions booked for Year 6 pupils between now and Christmas - details to follow.
There will be a Cycle Training Level 1 course open to Year 5 pupils in the New Year - look out for a parentmail in early 2025.

SAS Group:
We have welcomed two new members from September, from both ends of the school.
We have had fun creating Autumn pictures this half term and we are also working on some special new poppy creations in time for the whole school 11/11 Remembrance Service to be held at the church.
(Please note this group is for pupils of military families only)

Year 3 Visit to Tate Modern:
Last week Year 3 enjoyed a very interesting day out at Tate Modern.
We have been learning about Pop Art in class so it was exciting to see some famous artworks by Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein 'for real' in the gallery.
It was wonderful to see how the children really engaged with the artworks, making observational sketches and thinking about the use of line, colour, shape and space within each painting or print.

Year 5 Author Visit to Saint Cecilia's
We were thrilled for our Year 5 students, who enjoyed a recent visit to Saint Cecilia’s to meet esteemed author Erin Hunter (aka Victoria Holmes).
During this visit, the children had the unique opportunity to meet the renowned author Vicky Holmes, who is widely known as Daisy Meadows, the author of Rainbow Magic, Lucy Daniels, the creator of the Animal Ark series and New York Times Bestselling Warriors series.
The workshop was thoughtfully crafted to ignite the imagination of our young readers and writers, providing them with an inside look into Vicky Holmes’ inspiring journey as a writer.
The session allowed the students to directly engage with her work and gain valuable insights into the enchanting world of storytelling, which hopefully inspired the next generation of writers!

Year 6 TFL Workshop
Year 6 were lucky enough to have two members of TFL come and speak to us about safety when travelling on public transport. All of the children were given information on how to apply for their Zip Oyster card once they reach 11.

Year 6 Visit to Imperial War Museum:
Year 6 spent the day at the Imperial War Museum, exploring the WW1 and WW2 exhibitions. The children got to walk through a model WW1 trench and sit in a model anderson shelter. A real highlight of the trip was seeing a Spitfire! This was particularly exciting as we had just finished a lesson on the Battle of Britain.

Year 6 Celebration of Learning:
Year 6's celebration of reading assembly was a real highlight!
It was wonderful to see how the children threw themselves in to their characters and performed with such confidence.
Congratulations Year 6!

Year 4 Pasty Making:
We have spent the half term researching seasonal food, using this to design and make our own seasonal sweet pastries, which the children thoroughly enjoyed, particularly the tasting and evaluating aspect. Hopefully they can take these skills home and make them for others in the future. In music, the children have started developing their ukelele skills and are playing some lovely songs, which it has been great to hear!
Lucy Barter
Year 4 Local Walk:
In Geography, they have been looking at Spain, comparing its human and physical features with the UK, including a local walk and use of google maps where we compared a high street in Spain and the UK. We found a lot more estate agents in Southfields than Spain, although they both had a similar number of coffee shops!

Ex-Pupil Visit and Tour:
We were delighted to welcome back Mr Holbrook and his wife earlier this month and show him all the changes at St Michael's since he was a pupil here between 1956-1962.
He was amazed by all the changes and has especially fond memories of his teacherMrs Harper: "who would take me out of class to get me to talk properly: "THirty THousand feaTHers on a THrush's THroat"
He also remembers his Headteacher's office in the old part of the building which had an open fire and he particularly enjoyed sitting back down in his original place in 4B (even though he doesn't remember the chairs being so small!)
He said his time here was one of the happiest periods of his life and that one of the best parts was when he helped to grow vegetables for the school lunches in their own allotment at the back of the MUGA. It is here where he developed a life long love of gardening.

Our Wraparound Care;
Breakfast sessions start at 7:45am - 8:45am and include a substantial first meal of the day.
It has been a great start to the academic year for the school in terms of PE and Sport with many children achieving many personal goals as well as collective achievements. The children have been developing their football skills but we have put a great emphasis on developing collaboration, positive communication and leadership skills. It is important for the children to understand that all our children have different experiences of the sports we do and for those that are more experienced it is an opportunity to use their ability to help others and develop their leadership skills. It has been amazing to see so many children step up and have a positive impact on their peers and see so many children grow in confidence.
The children have been amazing in their gymnastics lessons with Kick working on their floor sequences. I have had the opportunity to teach and watch some of their lessons and their subject knowledge and vocabulary has been amazing.
We have had the results through for the Wandsworth Cross Country run by Enable and all our children did a great job but a special shout out goes out to our year 6 girls who finished 1st place. Our football and netball teams have been performing really well in the PPSSA leagues with the netballers winning the league. We also participated in the PPSSA cross country on Saturday 19th October and the children braved the rain to complete a tough muddy course. A special thank you to the year 5 and 6 team for running trials and inspiring the children to run. We also had year 4 girls attend the football festival run by the Wandsworth School Games as well as some children from across KS2 attending the Primary Panthalon. All the children made the school, themselves and their families proud and represented us so well.
As this newsletter is being published we will be finishing our final house competition for football and the results will be collated and announced when we return after half term. We have been reinforcing that whilst winning does feel great it is not the most important part of sport at this age and developing their attributes within the sport is the most important thing. The team that plays the best football doesn't always win for example but playing good football is an achievement and shows progress.
PE and Sport in Autumn 2
After half term we will be moving onto hockey and whilst it uses a stick and a small ball it is a very similar sport to football. The aim is to transfer some of the technical and tactical knowledge and application from football into hockey while having to develop a different type of coordination. Early years and KS1 will be using plastic hockey sticks. KS2 will be playing with wooden hockey sticks and hard balls so they will need to wear shin pads and a mouth guard for protection.

A wet Sunday morning Cross Country meeting!
Well done to the Panathlon team for their third place - and bronze medal - against Wandsworth Schools this week.
Our Inclusion:
"Everyone is different, everyone is special"
"Pupils are comfortable as the person God made them to be"
(SIAMS Inspection Report: February 2019)
It has been a good start to the year in the Inclusion Department. We have been impressed with how the children have transitioned into their new year groups and how hard they are working in class. So much has been achieved already.
A highlight of this time of year is our Playground Champions program. It has been a pleasure to read and receive the childrens' applications and to see the positive impact of peer support. We would like to say a huge thank you to Michelle Grigg for leading the Playground Champions Team and to all the children who made applications and who are working hard to ensure the playground is a place pupils feel supported.
Earlier in the term we ran a coffee morning with the Educational Wellbeing Service around the theme of goodbyes and building your child's independence and confidence. Dr Hattie Smart and Josephine Norman shared such valuable and practical information and strategies. Thank you for the positive feedback from those who attended and for your insightful contributions during the session.
As an Inclusion team we would like to wish you a very happy half term. Make sure you take time to rest and look after yourselves.
Kind Regards
Jenny Constable
