The children and staff all worked so hard to make them the amazing success that they were and it was so uplifting to see them performing to their families in this way.

On Wednesday we were proud to watch our choir take part in the switching on of the Southfields Lights on Wednesday evening. It was all so festive and impressive - but VERY COLD!

And it is only going to get colder so please make sure your children come in to school with a warm coat and hat and gloves each day as appropriate - named of course.

As I write, the Christmas Fair is in full swing and there are lots of PTA elves working hard to make sure the children have the most wonderful time. The Hall looks stunning, Santa's Grotto is so welcoming and the playground is in lovely snowy chaos thanks to the snowball fighting going on out there! All in all the children are having an absolute ball - "Rocking Around The Christmas Tree" - and we are so grateful to the hard working PTA for all their efforts to make it so.

Tuesday is the Panto (oh yes it is!) - further information is coming out regarding transport in case of impact from the train strike will be sent Monday.

Wednesday is Christmas Lunch day - we can't wait to see the hall all laid out and to sample all the kitchen ladies' delicious creations.

Thursday is the day of the KS1 Let's Rock concerts to families and then 9 Lessons and Carols is taking place at the church at 6pm that evening. We hope to see as many friends and family there as possible for such a very special occasion, led by Year 6.

Our thanks to Alex, Cyn (and the girls) as well as the Christmas tree team for all their hard work at the weekend, sorting, hefting trees and sweeping up enough pine needles to last the season. We hope everyone enjoys their trees.

By now, the reindeer are going back in their stable, Father Christmas has his feet up and the elves should be finished packing away the remnants of the Christmas Fair. We are so grateful to Years 1 and 5 for working so hard to bring the joy of Christmas to the children yet again, but also to all those who donated toys, books, time and energy to the event.

Did you know that our grandparents didn’t have video games when they were growing up! Their parents didn’t even have a phone!

In 1C, Ben’s grandpa showed us his yoyo and slinky. Ruben’s grandma described how she made her own toys and games out of leftover materials. Ivy Belle’s grandma showed us some books she read as a child and an old dolly that her mum made her out of stockings!

Hugo’s grandma showed us a special doll’s pram which she restored - it was beautiful. Ben’s grandma let us have a close look at her special dominoes. Emilia’s grandma showed us a silk handkerchief from Queen Elizabeth’s coronation celebrations and some paper dolls on which you can put different styles of paper clothing.

Poppy’s grandparents talked to us about growing up in Australia. We looked at an old skipping rope with wooden handles - it was very clever - when the rope wears out you can change it for a new rope by unscrewing the handles. Daniel’s grandma played London Bridge is falling down with us in the playground.

In 1CR, Arlo’s grandpa told us that he could ride his bicycle on the roads, as a child, because there weren’t many cars on the road. Lenny’s granny brought her very special set of Russian Dolls. There were 6 of them, they kept popping out of the next doll. We thought the dolls were really beautiful.

Khan’s granny told us all about her childhood and what it was like playing with 6 siblings. Their family had lots of boardgames that allowed for lots of people to join in. She also remembers listening to many stories told around the fire since there was no television.

Ivy’s nan brought her French Skipping elastic band. This was a game she played with her friends at school. She demonstrated how the game worked and later on, when we went outside, we got to have a go at playing French Skipping. It was great fun but required a lot of concentration!

We had a great afternoon with the grandparents and loved hearing all their stories about their childhood. We realised that our toys and games are very different from theirs but also that there are many games and toys that we still have today, but often they are made of different materials.
