We've come to the end of Summer Term 1 already and what a busy few weeks it has been.

It is also lovely to end such a hectic time with the calm of RFP this afternoon, and as I write the school is filled with families and friends benefiting from the joy that is reading together.

We can’t believe we have completed another half term at school! What a fabulous six weeks the children have had of some wonderful learning. We have been so busy across the St.Michael’s Early Years caring for new creatures, taking part in our Coronation events and planting herbs and flowers for our garden. The children are enjoying the warmer weather and all the events they have to look forward to in the new summer term.

The children are enjoying the warmer weather and all the events they have to look forward to in the new summer term.
We began our term with a visit from George at the Zoo Lab workshop. The children in Nursery & Reception were excited to meet some new minibeasts, learn all about them and touch them. During the morning, the children learnt about Flip and Flop the giant cockroaches, Bob the corn snake, Blondie the tarantula and Frodo the very bouncy frog! We sat quietly and used our gentle hands when touching the creatures. George from Zoolab was so impressed with our knowledge and amazed at some of our sensible questions.

The children were excited to learn all about worms and what they needed in order to grow in their wormery. The children had to collect lots of soil and compost. In RE, our Big Question has been, How does Jesus Rescue People? We have looked at many teachings from the Bible where Jesus has helped and saved those who needed Him. Each week, we have focussed on a different story and discussed what it means to us and how we can help those around us. We have made our own obstacle course and used a blindfold to help us understand what it might feel like to not have full vision. This helped us understand why Jesus helped the blind man.

Each week, we have focussed on a different story and discussed what it means to us and how we can help those around us. Year One have been busy writing a newspaper report about the sighting of a Gruffalo! They have made sure to include all of the features needed for a good report - being clear about writing facts involving when, where, what and who. They even included a quote from a character interview. If you are out in the woods over the half term break and spot a Gruffalo - please do not approach him - he may be dangerous. Instead - take a photo, send it to Year One and we will investigate further. In mathematics the children have been learning about counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. This is an introduction to multiplication. Keep working on number bonds and number patterns at home, as this is the basis for all mathematics and it is important that children have a good basis on which to build mathematical understanding. In science, the children have been exploring how seasons affect life. We have discovered that different seasons have different temperatures, hours of daylight and influence how plants grow and how people live. I hope you can get out and about over the half term break and see the wonderful plant life as we head into summer. Year One children also know a lot about farms. We have been comparing farm life and city life and looking at how to read, make and use a map with a key. Please use a map over the break if you go to a museum, or place of interest - or look at the journey you will take on Google maps. Year One children also presented a brilliant assembly this term. The children had to use their teamwork skills, remember and deliver their lines loudly and clearly and sing and dance! This learning lays the groundwork for future presentations and performances. In RE the children have been asking the big question ‘What responsibility has God given people for taking care of Creation?’ We have had many wonderful discussions about how to care for the world and the Christian account of creation. We have had a busy term full of learning in Year One and the teachers are proud of all that the children have achieved.

We have had a busy and productive half term in the Middle Phase and it is lovely to see everyone in their Summer uniform and getting out on the field to enjoy the good weather at lunch time now. There really is a summery vibe which was enhanced by the wonderful celebrations for the Coronation recently. Year 3 and 4 children worked hard to learn songs with Mrs Minster and dance moves with Louise to help make sure that show was extra special.

In English, we have been reading the Great Kapok Tree and Where the Forest meets the Sea, both are thought provoking books around the subject of rainforests. We have used them to inspire our writing. First we wrote a recount about the boy's day at the beach. Then we wrote a persuasive advert to help people protect the rainforests.

As a finale, we acted out the Battle of Hastings in which Duke William of Normandy was victorious over King Harold. In Science lessons this half term, we have been learning how sound is made and travels via sound waves and the difference between volume and pitch. The children have carried out some investigations to see if their predictions were correct. In French, the topic has been Weather and the Water Cycle, which links nicely to our previous science learning and we now know how to describe weather conditions and temperature in different parts of France using French phrases. In PE, everyone has been practising their batting and fielding skills in cricket.

Wow, what a whirlwind of a term it has been! As we wrap up the past few weeks, I wanted to take a moment to share some of the incredible events and achievements that have taken place within the upper phase.

Firstly, it's safe to say that this term has been a busy one, bustling with activity and excitement. Amongst the hustle and bustle, our fantastic Year 6 students have been diligently preparing for their end-of-KS2 SATs. Their commitment and hard work have been truly inspiring, and I want to extend my deepest gratitude to our amazing Year 6 teachers and families who have gone above and beyond to ensure that our children are well-prepared for these assessments.
Firstly, it's safe to say that this term has been a busy one, bustling with activity and excitement. Furthermore, the girls played a friendly against another local team teams put their heart and soul into the competition. The final score…4-1 to St Michael’s. Their performance was simply outstanding. The passion, determination, and sportsmanship they displayed were a joy to witness.

This history-themed trip gave them a chance to step into the shoes of the Victorians and explore how life changed between 1837 and 1901. It was an eye-opening adventure that allowed them to gain a deeper understanding of the past and its impact on our present.

Moving on to our incredible Year 5 students, they too have had their fair share of exciting activities. They dedicated their time to preparing for the coronation of King Charles, delving into the historical significance of this event and the monarchy as a whole. The whole school community were enthralled by their performance which made for a historical event at St Michael’s

This week, our Year 5 students had a special visit from an upper-phase parent who works as a midwife. This visit provided valuable insights into the growth and changes they will experience as they journey towards adolescence. Both Year 5 and Year 6 had the opportunity to visit the local Fazal Mosque, expanding their knowledge and understanding of Islam. These visits provided valuable insights into different cultures and promoted inclusivity within our school community. It's heartening to see our students embracing diversity and broadening their horizons.

Lastly, we were fortunate to have Baz Moffat, the author of "The Female Body Bible," visit our school. Her inspiring talk empowered our children to recognise the importance of sports for both boys and girls. It's wonderful to witness our students embracing the notion of equality and breaking down stereotypes.

We have now finished our striking and fielding unit where our main focus was cricket. It would be great if the children can keep working on the skills we have learnt over the summer. We worked on under and overarm bowling techniques, batting, fielding skills including barriers, throwing and catching. We finished with house competitions for KS2 in which we did continuous cricket with Granville finishing as our house winners this term which is their 3rd win this academic year. We will be starting athletics after the half herm in preparation for our sports/house day on Friday 30th June

Our sport leaders including house captains, vice captains and sports ambassadors completed their leadership training on Thursday last week by leading a carousel of fantastic activities for year 2. Nick Miller from the Wandsworth School Games came to watch the children and was impressed with their planning and delivery of the activities. This programme has been amazing this year and having the year 6 sports leaders supporting clubs has really developed their leadership skills which will be so useful for their future. The younger children have also really benefited from having such good role models. We are really proud of all the children.

Our girls football team played a friendly against Sheringdale on Thursday last week. Considering it was a local derby both teams played the game in a good spirit and played some good football. St Michael's won the game 4-1. Go St Michael's!

This half term, St Michael's have hosted Honeywell Primary School to play netball friendlies. Despite the fact we have some less experienced players in Y4 and Y5, they played brilliantly and held their own against a confident opposition. It was great to see the pupils supporting their own by coaching and guiding one another through the game. The progress was evident, even in the space of an hour!

Our library has been buzzing with activity this half term and we hope the children have been enjoying their weekly class visits.

A very warm welcome to our new library volunteer, Ann, who joins us on Tuesday afternoons! Ann has much library experience and knowledge and has been busy helping us with various tasks in the library as well as reading a story or two to a very lucky Yr 2 class! We have continued to have fun on Fridays doing craft and playing games in the Oasis but now that the weather is perking up it is lovely to make use of the great outdoors, especially our lovely climbing frame and Sensory Garden.

A highlight of the last few weeks of course was the SAS group's part in the Coronation celebrations, when they marched up beautifully, waving their flags to the 'Trooping The Colour' song.
