This week at St. Michael’s we have been thinking about growing through mistakes and asking the question: How can we grow in wisdom even when we get things wrong?
Sometimes it can feel frustrating when things don’t go to plan but it is often in those moments that we learn the most and discover new strength. When I spoke with children this week, many explained how they work hard to have a growth mindset and try again – even though this isn’t easy. It was wonderful to hear them express such resilience and determination.
In worship, we explored the story of Peter denying Jesus and then being restored (Luke 22, John 21). This reminds us that when we make mistakes, God’s grace meets us where we are. Just as Peter was restored, we too can find hope and strength in God’s love, learning and growing each time we rise again.
On Monday evening, I visited Southwark Cathedral for the Southwark Diocesan Board of Education’s celebration of the Eucharist to mark the beginning of the academic year. It was an uplifting time of worship with many heads and clergy members from across the different boroughs. We received the new vision for the Board of Education, encompassed in three words: Belong – Serve – Thrive. We are pleased to be part of a group that supports education which inspires and in turn, transforms lives.
Today, we were delighted to share in Year 6’s Celebration of Learning and take a leap into the future, all the way to the year 2085. Well done to all the pupils for their hard work and creativity, we hope their parents enjoyed seeing what they dream of achieving in their future...
Play often involves trial and error - building, creating, or inventing something that doesn’t work the first time. This is exactly how children develop problem-solving skills, creativity and resilience. Just as in our worship theme, it’s through making mistakes and trying again that real growth happens. What helps you to keep going and trying again when things don’t go to plan?
Please have a restful and happy weekend.
Best wishes
Mrs Harris
