Message from Mrs Harris, Headteacher
This week at St Michael’s, we have been exploring how to live humbly, beginning with the question: “What does humility teach us about leadership and love?” Through the story of Jesus entering Jerusalem on a donkey (Matthew 21:1–11), children reflected on how Jesus modelled true leadership, not through power or pride, but through service, gentleness and love. Many pupils spoke beautifully about what makes a great leader, describing those who listen, support and lift others up. Teachers have seen this lived out across the school in countless small acts of kindness, teamwork and encouragement.
All children also had their individual and sibling photographs taken this week, and it was lovely to see everyone looking so smart and proud of their school. I was fortunate to spend some time with church headteachers across the borough at Canterbury, where we heard inspiring speakers, such as Krish Kandiah, reflecting on the Southwark Diocesan Board of Education’s theme of “Belonging.” The message resonated strongly with our school’s focus on humility. Belonging begins when we make space for others, listen deeply and recognise the worth of every person, knowing that God sees us in his own image.
Next week, children will spend time reflecting on how they have shown our school values — Love, Serve and Grow — so far this term. We will also be welcoming visitors to lead Black History Month workshops, giving pupils the opportunity to learn about the achievements and creativity of Black Britons and to reflect on how these stories connect with our shared values of respect, compassion and justice.
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition… rather, in humility value others above yourselves… [Jesus] made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant.” Philippians 2:3–4, 7
This verse captures the essence of humility: it is not about thinking less of ourselves, but about thinking of ourselves less, and lifting others up. When we do this, we create true belonging and community, where everyone feels seen and valued. You might like to talk at home about when your child has helped someone feel included this week, what makes them feel they belong, or how humility can be shown through listening, serving or forgiving.
We look forward to seeing you all at our parents evenings. Appointments will be held in the main hall with books available in your child's class.
By this sixth week of the Autumn term, many children begin to feel the effects of busier routines and new challenges. Research into child wellbeing and learning (EEF 2023; UCL 2022) highlights the importance of belonging and balance at this stage of the term. Simple, consistent routines — such as calm bedtimes, shared meals and regular moments to talk about the day — provide the security children need to thrive. When families focus on connection rather than perfection, children develop resilience and confidence. As we celebrate Black History Month, conversations about courage, kindness and creativity can help children appreciate difference and fairness, while modelling humble leadership at home. By apologising when needed, listening well and serving others, shows them what true strength and love look like in action.
As we move towards the end of this half term, may we continue to walk humbly, serve with love, and grow together as a community where everyone belongs.
Black History Month Workshops:
The children are enjoying a series of workshops both this week and next on the theme of 'Standing Firm In Power and Pride'.
The younger children will be focusing on the true story of Floella Benjamin who is part of the Windrush generation.
Others will learn all about the wealth of talent amongst the black community, from sports people, to scientists, to activities, to musicians, to politicians and to writers!
And the older children will be exploring the impact of the Black Lives Matter movement with the theme: 'Protest; If Not Now, Then When? '
Class 4B went out and about around Southfields Village this week, populating their own maps as they went....

Supervision At Collection:
Please ensure that when you pick up your child they need to be supervised at all times - the gates are open and children can wander.
It is down to the parent collecting to keep eyes on their child at all times once a member of staff has returned the child to your care.
If your child is not going to attend an after school club they are booked in for please ensure the office and the class teacher are alerted asap.
If your child decides on the day not to go to their club and instead goes home, you MUST still inform the office.
Staff spend much of each afternoon searching for children who have not turned up to their clubs and are therefore unaccounted for.
This is an important safeguarding issue and your assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Important Notice Re Tailgating:
When you are let in to the school grounds please do NOT allow anyone in behind you.
Visitors should only come into school if they are either visiting the front office or going round the side to wraparound care.
Please note that there are two separate bells for these two separate entrances.
Love In A Box Advance Notice:
Leaflets will be sent home for families to be able to prepare the boxes during half term.
Boxes can then be returned to school throughout w/c 3 November.
It is lovely to receive such positive messages from parents who have commented that they like the way comms from school via Arbor come in to their personal email box.
"...it has been incredibly helpful - it 's the first time in our almost six years at the school that I've found it much easier to stay on top of information without feeling overwhelmed."
