Principal's Update

Dear Colleagues,

I hope you enjoyed the Children's Day celebrations with the boys, and thanks to all the staff who organised the PVs to make it possible, and to our SEN team for introducing the purple parade to the boys. I would like to congratulate Rosshini and Hidayah for being awarded the MOE Service Excellence Gold Award (MSEA), and Azizah, NAT, Suhaili and Yong Seng for the MSEA Silver award.

The haze situation is intensifying and I expect that there will be days where we will cross the PSI 100 mark or even the PSI 200 mark in the coming weeks. There will be different responses depending on the PSI level, ranging from stopping all outdoor activity and closing doors and windows with air filters on, to the other extreme of school closure which MOE will declare if it is very severe, and we should mentally be ready to pivot to HBL at short notice. We will step up the Haze preparation and update you on the PSI levels and the actions needed via the school HP over WhatsApp.

From 21 Sep to 21 Oct, Lasallians around the world are encourage to commit to peace and the theme for this year is Peace within our Reach. 7Hs - Sharpening Our Saw at Children's Day

Date and Time of Event:  -

Information Details: -

Dear all,

Happy Children's Day again!  And as we now enter the 2nd half of Term 4, post PSLE and pre EYE, and dig in with our classes in prep towards the end of year examinations, let us continue to keep faith and serve in our passion towards the joy of learning - bringing the wonders of the world to our children and inspiring our children to make their positive difference to the world.

Here is a good heartwarming inspiring anecdote from the news reports, in a way reminding us of the possibilities of youth and children, to dare to dream, dare to inquire, dare to find out, dare to make a difference.

What's inscribed on the ancient Singapore Stone? 18-year-old gets a step closer to revealing its secrets - TODAY (todayonline.com)

And this anecdote in a way illustrates 3 of our Stephenian Outcomes:

Love for Reading, Spirit of Curiosity & Connecting with Friends

Interestingly, the featured 18-year-old perhaps had his beginnings of curiosity and discovery in his love for books and reading in his younger days, perhaps through the imagination of worlds and lives - something there for us teachers in cultivating the love for reading and quest for knowledge in our boys from young.  Even more interestingly, his curiosity in the Singapore Stone was first sparked by the story-telling at the Primary 5 NE Show! And finally, he actively asked friends for their inputs on aspects he needed help in.

In a way, his story embodies what this year's WPS shared about enhancing the 21CC Framework (la Swiss Roll) with greater emphasis on adaptive & inventive thinking, communication and civic literacy, for students to become creators, connectors and contributors.  (If you would like to find out more, you could refer to email from MOE Engagement Unit: [MOE Engage] Schools WPS 2023: Shaping the Future of Learning, dated 25 Sept.)

Never Too Young

Of course, some of us may be tempted to say that an 18-year-old is a young adult, our boys are too young. Or that he is a prodigy exceptional student from the specialised NUS High School of Math and Science.  But from a different angle, the featured young adult could also be considered by some to be too young in the world of archaeology and history. And every child has the right and ability to be curious and to find out things, to imagine, to improve.

The truth is, all science, discoveries and advancement come from Man's perennial questions - Who am I? Why am I here? What is it? Why is it so? What next? And no one is too young to ask these questions, to be curious, because that spirit of curiosity is innate in all of us, particularly more so in children, our boys. Or more evidently so in the way our boys will always ask us 'Why' regardless - then perhaps we could harness this and direct their 'Whys' to the pursuit of knowledge and learning.

Credere et Servire

As our school motto goes, Credere et Servire - To Believe and To Serve, and we must always believe in our children's ability to believe in possibilities, and guide them to proactively take their many steps of knowledge curiosity.

Let us always be encouraged to see our boys as unique individuals, unpolished stones that could one day be diamonds of different cuts, shapes, sizes and brilliance, and help the shine in their own ways.

Even the smallest person can change the course of the future ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
