Principal's Update

Dear Colleagues,

As we pause to rest during this blessed Good Friday - Easter long weekend, let us also take the opportunity to think about our blessings and how we can continue to be a blessing our students, colleagues, families and friends. I leave us with this verse from a musical which I like very much because it reminds me of Habit 1 of the 7 Habits: Be Proactive.

A bell's not a bell 'til you ring it

A song's not a song 'til you sing it

The Love in your heart wasn't put there to stay

Love isn't love 'til you give it away!

~ Oscar Hammerstein

Happy Easter!

SPD Book Sharing: On Assessment

By: VP Edwin

Relevant Levels: -

Date of Event/Programme/Item: -

Deadline to Note: -

Information Details:

Dear everyone, please find attached here the PDF of the slides I used on Tuesday for our sharing on Assessment and Feedback. I hope you have found the sharing useful, and may perusing these slides and reading the key extracts in the slides again provide you with a deeper refresh of what effective assessment truly is fo you.

Also attaching here the PDFs of the chapters where these extracts came from:

  • Assessment in SG: Perspectives for Cklassroom Practice - Chp 3 on Learning Gaps and Chp 4 on Assessment As Learning. There are various other chapters in the book on specific subject areas and specific standard levels. The book is available in the Staff Resource Book Cupboard, and also online at a very affordable piece.

  • Embedded Formative Assessment by Dylan Williams - Chp 5 on Feedback that Moves Learning Forward. There are other chapters on other aspects, e.g relating to learning styles and such. The book is similarly available in the Staff Resource Book Cupboard, and also the latest 2nd edition available online.

The main crux of the sharing is that we need to identify accurately the student's specific learning gap(s), and then we need to provide meaningful actionable feedback recommendations that the student can use to improve his learning. Prof William provides various perspectives, anecdotes, strategies and methods for such meaningful value-adding to properly happen.

Our purpose and mission as teachers are fulfilled when our students truly learn, and our students truly learn only when we truly identify their needs and gaps, and then provide them with the targeted feedback, or in colloqiual terms feed-forward, that moves their learning ahead.

Enjoy, and let's keep honing our craft, to keep helping every one of the boys who come through our classrooms add value to himself.
