With their high reachability to generations, and major role in creating and disseminating knowledge, universities have been the major drivers of local, regional and global innovation, economic and social development. As such, universities have a critical role in the marketing and achievement of the SDGs while also benefitting from them.
Sustainability Development Goal 16, Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions, seeks to ensure the needed support for strong institutions by universities, as well as promoting Justice and Peace.
On the country level, KAU, as a higher education institution, occupies a unique position within the Saudi society and is aware of the responsibilities towards the strong institutions in addition to empowering peace and justice.
KAU has tackled the different aspects related to SDG16 which are available and accessible to all students, staff, visitors and faculty. Actions & procedures that KAU is striving on implementing to deploy SDG16’s goals within KAU are:
Developing policies, procedures and plans to ensure the campus is safe for all staff, students and visitors.
Ensuring that procurement policies and procedures clearly indicate an intolerance to working with any companies known or found to be involved in exploitation of people.
Ensuring that the policies and culture of the institution clearly indicate that bribery, corruption, violence, crime and acts of terrorism is unacceptable.
Organizing cross-cultural activities on campus.
Ensuring that all staff and students have access to information about their rights & obligations.
Involving staff, students and key stakeholders in university governance decisions.

King Abdulaziz University Efforts to Support Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG16)
1. University Governance and Student Participation
Organizing student elections representing each college in the Student Advisory Committee, enhancing student participation in decision-making processes.
Establishing a Students’ Activities Management Board led by experienced faculty members to manage and support various student activities.
Issuing the University Student Rights Policy and the Students’ Academic Rights Document to clarify students’ rights and obligations and to support both academic and non-academic freedom.
2. Specialized Centers and Units
Establishing centers and units that monitor the implementation of SDG16 to ensure alignment with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.
Developing policies and procedures for engaging with local stakeholders outside the university, such as the Graduates and Skills Development Center, to identify needs and contribute to their fulfillment.

Supporting the freedom to conduct presentations, workshops, and other educational activities related to their research fields.
