Combating Desertification and Restoring Degraded Lands
The Faculty of Environmental Sciences and the Center of Excellence in Environmental Studies organize specialized activities focused on finding practical solutions to drought mitigation and land restoration.
Among these initiatives is the Art Exhibition: “A Journey to Explore Solutions for Drought Resistance and Land Restoration,” which integrates scientific tools and creative expression to address environmental challenges.
2. Recycling Programs and Resource Conservation
The “Environmental Friends Convoy” initiative contributes to resource conservation through the collection and recycling of paper waste.
The campaign successfully collected over 68 tons of paper, helping reduce the depletion of natural resources and promote the concept of a circular economy within the university and the wider community.

3. Strategic Partnerships and Community Awareness
KAU collaborates with government entities to organize environmental awareness events, such as the “Healthy Homeland” Forum, held in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (Makkah Region Branch).
Additionally, the Scientific Endowment (Waqf) and the Faculty of Human Sciences and Design co-organized the International Conference on Sustainability and Quality of Life, which brought together leading local and international experts.

4. Scientific Research and Awareness Presentations
The Faculty of Environmental Sciences actively showcases its research projects and community initiatives in international forums, such as its participation in the COP16 Conference in Riyadh.

5. Twinning with the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture
The department submitted to the Ministry an initiative on saline crops. This initiative aims to conduct scientific research on saline crops in some of the research centers affiliated with the Ministry.
6. Cooperation with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology
- Phenotypic and molecular diversity to study salinity tolerance in 400 quinoa strains using small aircraft (Drones)
- Reducing irrigation water losses by using coated sand to reduce irrigation water losses in tomato and pepper plants under dry areas conditions.
- Improving growth and productivity of wheat and barley under saline irrigation conditions using beneficial microorganisms.
- Study of phenotypic and molecular diversity to study the salt tolerance of wild tomatoes using small aircraft (Drones)
