King Abdulaziz University, as a government university, is committed to the general policy of managing and disposing of all types of waste.
King Abdulaziz University places great emphasis on environmental preservation and sustainability through innovative initiatives that aim to reduce pollution and minimize plastic waste. One of its most notable efforts is the “Don’t Throw It, Endow It” initiative, launched by the Scientific Endowment in 2011. It is considered a pioneering national model in waste management and recycling.
The initiative aims to reduce plastic, paper, and electronic waste through sustainable collection and recycling processes, in collaboration with public and private entities. It also conducts awareness and field campaigns to promote environmental consciousness within and beyond the university. The initiative has effectively contributed to reducing pollution and protecting coastal and marine ecosystems from plastic waste, reflecting the university’s strong commitment to sustainability and the principles of a circular economy.
King Abdulaziz University, represented by the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, held the closing ceremony of the “Redefining Plastics” competition under the theme “Young Innovators for a Changing Future.”
The event was organized in collaboration with SABIC and the Program for the Sustainability of Petroleum Demand, and in partnership with the Scientific Endowment (Waqf).

It is an initiative for waste management launched by the Scientific Endowment at King Abdulaziz University. It is considered a community-based voluntary initiative, the first of its kind in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, aiming to manage waste effectively and sustainably through sorting, collection, and recycling, while providing research studies to serve the beneficiaries. The initiative will start its first phase in the western region, specifically during the Hajj season, and its strategic plan includes expanding to all regions of the Kingdom in its subsequent phases to convey its message and achieve its goals.
The initiative aims to manage and recycle waste during the Hajj season within the holy sites, creating a model environment that will make Makkah a smart city, contributing to the realization of the Saudi Green Initiative in line with the Kingdom's Vision 2030 and enhancing the gross domestic product.
