Life on land is fundamental to the stability of ecosystems and the health of our planet. It plays a vital role in protecting biodiversity, preserving soil, regulating the climate, and ensuring the sustainability of natural resources for future generations. With growing environmental challenges—such as deforestation, land degradation, and the loss of natural habitats—caring for terrestrial ecosystems has become an urgent necessity to maintain ecological balance and support sustainable development. Goal 15 emphasizes the importance of conserving wildlife and terrestrial resources as a cornerstone for building a more sustainable future.
Driven by this importance, King Abdulaziz University places great emphasis on Life on Land through projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing vegetation cover, protecting the environment, and improving ecosystem quality within and around the campus, in support of the targets of SDG 15.
Green Numbers at King Abdulaziz University
The Saudi Green Initiative is a leading national effort aimed at expanding vegetation cover, combating desertification, and protecting terrestrial ecosystems, contributing to improved quality of life and the sustainability of natural resources in the Kingdom.
In line with this initiative, King Abdulaziz University supports its goals by expanding green spaces on campus and enhancing plant diversity through the cultivation of thousands of trees, shrubs, and seasonal plants. These efforts reflect the university’s contribution to achieving SDG 15, which focuses on conserving, protecting, and restoring terrestrial ecosystems.

KAU publishes and reports all events and data that are related to SDG15, mainly online on the SDG related page, or as part of its strategy, as well as other dedicated reports, to monitor and control the sustainability goals’ improvement within KAU and as part of KAU’s alignment with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.

Here is a brief list of events and actions that are related to "Life On Land" and which are detailed in the SDG15's related reports:
Ensure the conservations and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems, specifically, forests, and drylands, in line with obligations under national Vision 2030 and the international agreements.
Promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, and substantially increase reforestation locally.
Combat desertification and restore lands affected by desertification, drought and floods.
Take urgent actions to reduce the degradation of natural habitats.
Help integrate ecosystem values into the national and local planning.
King Abdulaziz University, represented by the Faculty of Earth Sciences, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Royal Road Arabia to collaborate on research fields, exchange expertise, and develop national talent in the areas of mining and earth sciences.
King Abdulaziz University, represented by the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, organized the “Redefining Plastic” competition under the theme “Young Innovators for a Changing Future.” The event was held in collaboration with SABIC and the Oil Demand Sustainability Program, with strategic partnership from the Scientific Endowment.
