15.3.5: Collaborate with the Local Community to Maintain Shared Land Ecosystems
King Abdulaziz University seeks to strengthen collaboration with local communities, government entities, and volunteer initiatives to protect terrestrial ecosystems and ensure their sustainability. This collaboration includes participation in scientific research, awareness programs, and sustainable management of environmental resources, reflecting the university’s commitment to preserving the natural environment and promoting the sustainability of wildlife.
1. Green Grounds Initiative (Bqaa Green)
The “Green Grounds” initiative is a community-based volunteer project launched by the Scientific Endowment in collaboration with the Center of Excellence for Research in Advanced Materials at King Abdulaziz University, and is considered the first of its kind in Saudi Arabia. The initiative aims to manage waste effectively and sustainably through sorting, collection, and recycling, in addition to providing research studies to support environmental strategies.
The initiative begins in the Western Region during the Hajj season and plans to expand to all regions of the Kingdom in subsequent phases. It involves collaboration with the Holy Capital Municipality to facilitate field operations, Joudi Golden Company to supervise operational teams, and the National Waste Management Center to support waste management.
The initiative also focuses on promoting the transition to a circular economy in Saudi Arabia, reducing waste reaching landfills, and enhancing the use of recycled materials in manufacturing.
2. Saudi Green Initiative
The Saudi Green Initiative is a national program aimed at promoting environmental sustainability across all regions of the Kingdom, based on three main pillars:
1. Reducing carbon emissions.
2. Afforestation and increasing vegetation cover.
3. Land reclamation and protection of terrestrial and marine areas.
with the Saudi Green Initiative by implementing research and awareness programs, supporting afforestation projects, and protecting terrestrial ecosystems, thereby enhancing collaboration between the university, local communities, and government entities, and contributing to environmental conservation and biodiversity sustainability.
3. King Abdulaziz University contributes to enhancing collaboration with the local community for the protection of terrestrial ecosystems through the implementation of a series of community awareness programs during 2024, including:

• “Save Your Environment” Waste Removal Campaign
• Awareness Kit at Prince Majed Park
• Beach Cleaning Campaign
• Planting Seedlings at KAU
• Environmental Awareness Exhibition
• “Our Healthy Homeland”
