We will finish up summarizing the Civil War Era on Monday and begin studying Westward Expansion and Chapter 5. Open House is Wednesday. Be sure to tell your parents about Open House on Wednesday!
MONDAY 8/15--News, Finish the Story of US Civil War and discuss the impact of the film Gone with the Wind on our understanding of the Reconstruction Era. After we finish that start Ch 5 Brainstorm Activity--What would you expect on the Western Frontier if you moved there in the 1800s? (think of all of your senses). Consider the following questions in discussion how you would make a living, how would you co-exist with native people, how might settlers and Native Americas differ in regards to the land? Review timeline on p. 200 with students and ask questions from Timeline Discussion in text.
TUESDAY 8/16--News, Assign reading and vocabulary in class. Due when we take the test. Hand out notes for Ch 5. Begin lecture over Section 1. Start with One American's Story on p. 202 with cultural assimilation. Be sure to reference Reservations map on page 205. Also share that for understanding your book you can take each heading an turn it into a question. If you cannot answer that question after class discussion or reading then you should ask questions or read again. In section 1 students will understand the nature/lifestyles of the Great Plains and the conflict with Native American culture.
WEDNESDAY 8/17--News, Use clips from Dances with Wolves with students to show the hunt of buffalo. Special treat? Myths and Truths of Cowboys, show clips from Tombstone to share the vigilante style of the Wild West. Finish Section 1 lecture and notes.
THURSDAY 8/18--News, start Section 2 and 3 lecture and note. Be sure to point out images and pictures from book about life on the Plains. Students should be able to describe the types of living situations on the Plains and the inventions that helped settlers. Also students will learn how farmers came together to support each other and take on politics.
FRIDAY 8/19--News, students will use guide to watch Story of US Westward to supplement class discussion and materials from book. Test will be on Monday. We will do a Kahoot prior to the test for review. Vocabulary will be due prior to test. No late vocabulary accepted.
