We will continue to follow current events and reflect on the last election as we study voting and voter behavior in Chapters 5 and 6. A paper/project will be assigned with this unit of study so it is very important that you try to be here each and every day. We use a lot of examples and video clips from last year's elections along with political advertisements.
MONDAY 3/18--First hour will be going to see State Representative Clyde Kersey speak at Terre Haute North in honor of his receiving the 2013 Polaris Award. This is an exciting opportunity to meet not only a former North educator, but also one of our State leaders. 5th hour will use this time to catch up on the Democrats and Republicans conversation and watch news stories. Both classes need to read Chapter 6 for discussions this week.
TUESDAY 3/19--Begin the hour by discussing why we do things like Simply the Best tournament (roles of citizens). Show clip from 60 Minutes on children living in poverty. Explain role of tea party in party politics and show clip from CPAC this last weekend and go vote commercials. What party uses media most effectively.
WEDNESDAY 3/20--Finish up talking about 3rd party politics, allow some time to read Ch 6 in class. Highlights from the party conventions from last year. Show timeline to the White House. Go over Section 1 Ch 6.
THURSDAY 3/21--Highlights from debates from 2012 election and go over sections 2 and 3 in Chapter 5. Handout writing assignment that will be do in one week about exploring your own beliefs or those around you. This assignment will have as much weight or impact as a test score. It is important that you turn it in because not doing so could drop your grade as much as two letter grades.
FRIDAY 3/22--Finish up Section 3 if needed. Looks at political advertising and styles of commercials. The political advertising styles are not in your book so you need to be sure to get this from power point of classmates if you are absent n this day.
