I don’t sing anymore
(Iron bridge / The test)
A nice song from the tradition of northern Italy that has its roots in old times and was also adapted during the First World War (anti war song), then moving on to the repertoire of osteria( tavern) and mondariso (rice paddies workers) songs.
There are many variations of this song, as in the case of the first video, in which we only get to the middle of the traditional story. It is also known under the title "Iron Bridge" and "The Test". Very easy and catchy melody: come on, let's sing!
Motivo molto facile e orecchiabile: coraggio, cantiamo!

I don’t sing anymore
I don't sing anymore
and I don't dance anymore
because my love
joined the army
He joined the army
went to war
And who knows when
he will come back
They all return
The others return
but 'my love
is not back
We’ll get
An iron bridge made
To cross the sea
When she was
beyond the sea
She met a handsome
young man
She said to him: Young man,
dear handsome young man
Have you seen
My first love?
Yes, yes, I have seen him
in the parade ground
being carried
to bury
And the girl
to hear this
falls to the ground
from great pain
He told her to get up
Up, get up
that's me
'Your first love
If you had been
'My first love
two words
you should have said
I did this
for a test
if you are sincere
in loving.
