About Kupalinka

“Kupalinka” is a well-known Belorusian folk song related to the folklore festivity celebrated on July 6 in the Gregorian calendar (Russia, Ucraina, Bielorussia) and on June 24 in the Julian calendar (Poland). It dates back to the pre-Christian era. Kupala was a pagan deity of love, harvest and  fertility. It was thought that during Kupala’s night miracles took place. When Christianity took hold  in this part of Europe in the second half of the 10th century, the festivity did not die out, the pagan tradition was incorporated to the Christian holiday of Saint John the Baptist, whose feast day is on June 24. In this way, the traditional Slavonic rite of Kupala connected with water was associated with the act of baptism by immersion.

The song tells about a girl who at night is in the garden, picks roses to weave a wreath, which she will let it float down the river. If the wreath drifts away far away, the girl will get married. If the wreath gets back to shore, she will not find a husband in the coming year. If the wreath drowns, the girl gets sick.  

Much loved song by the Belarusian people. It was also sung during the peaceful protests of summer 2020 against the regime currently in power in Belarus.

Kupalinka è un noto canto popolare bielorusso connesso con la festa del folklore slavo che si celebra in Russia, Ucraina, Polonia e Bielorussia nella notte tra il 6 e 7 luglio secondo il calendario gregoriano, quella tra il 23 e 24 giugno secondo il calendario giuliano, in corrispondenza della festa di San Giovanni Battista.

E’ una tradizione molto antica: risale infatti all’epoca precristiana. Kupala era il dio pagano dell’amore, del raccolto e della fertilità: durante la notte in cui si festeggiava si pensava avvenissero cose miracolose. Nella seconda metà del decimo secolo il cristianesimo si diffuse in tutta l’area ma, invece di scomparire, le tradizionali celebrazioni della festa pagana vennero associate a quelle per San Giovanni Battista (Ivan in russo significa Giovanni). Fu così che il rito tipico del Kupala (Kupala è il fonema slavo collegato al lavarsi in acqua) fu collegato all’atto battesimale per immersione.

La canzone parla di una ragazza che nel buio della notte si trova in un giardino per raccogliere delle rose, dei quali fa una ghirlanda per dopo gettarla nel fiume. Se la ghirlanda va via trasportata dal fiume, la ragazza si sposera’. Se la ghirlanda tornerà verso la riva, la ragazza non trovera il marito. Se la ghirlanda affonderà, la ragazza si ammalerà.

Canzone molto amata dal popolo bielorusso. È stata anche più volte cantata durante le proteste pacifiche dell'estate 2020 contro il regime attualmente al potere in Bielorussia.
