Ta pediá tou Pireá / Τα Παιδιά του Πειραιά / Children of Piraeus
Manos Hatzidakis (Μάνος Χατζιδάκις) 1960
Famous popular song composed in 1960 for the movie Never on Sunday ( Ποτέ την Κυριακή, Poté tin Kyriakí)
The film tells the story of Ilya, a self-employed, free-spirited prostitute who lives in the port of Piraeus in Greece, and Homer, an American tourist and classical scholar who is enamored of all things Greek. Homer feels Ilya's life style typifies the degradation of Greek classical culture, and attempts to steer her onto the path of morality, while, at the same time, Ilya attempts to loosen Homer up.
In 1961, the song was nominated and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, a first for a foreign-language picture since the Academy began to recognize achievements in this category in 1934

Aπ' το παράθυρό μου στέλνω
Aπό την πόρτα μου σαν βγω

The Children of Piraeus
From my window I send one and two and three and four kisses
That reach the Port’s one and two and three and four birds
I would have wanted to have had one and two and three and four children (boys)
Who when grown up would become stalwart lads for the joy of Piraeus
No matter how much I would search, I'd never find another such port
Nothing makes me as crazy as does, Piraeus
When twilight falls, songs fill the air
And as the Port’s (Bouzouki) plectrums strum, it fills up with the lads
Ahh (sigh) from the moment I step outside my door
There’s no one that exists with whom I won’t make love
And in the evening when I sleep, I know that, I know that I’ll dream about him
Beads I’ll place around my neck like rosaries; like protecting rosaries
And in the evenings I’ll wait at the Port
Where some stranger I'll find
No matter how much I would search, I'd never find another such port
Nothing makes me as crazy as does, Piraeus
When twilight falls, songs fill the air
And as the Port’s (Bouzouki) plectrums strum, it fills up with the lads
