Episode 166: Looking back and looking forward with hope.

Looking back and looking forward with hope -  Episode 166

“Looking back on your year can help you be motivated going into the new year.”   Happy New year to all!  I have to be honest and share that it took me an extra week to get motivated to get an episode out so I followed some advice and am taking time to look back on a few of my favorite books and episodes from 2023 as well as looking forward and sharing a few of the goals and habits for 2024.  I also mention how I am going to keep the process in mind even more than the outcome as I try to accomplish some of my goals this year.

Show Notes:  Hi Friends! I hope you enjoyed listening to this episode.  Below are all the references.

What I learned this week:  This week was about looking back at some of my favorite episodes and books that I read this year.  There were some good ones for sure.

First book that I just loved learning about and sharing with you was The Confident Mind by Dr. Nate Zinsser.  A few of my favorite things about this book is really understanding how powerful you can train your mind to be and that you can train you mind to look for the best in yourself.

Episodes that I share all about this book are as follows:

The next book that was another favorite of this year is I don't have to make everything all better by Gary B and Joy Saunders Lundberg.

It is so important to remember that we really don't have to make everything all better, in fact, we can't, even if we would like too.  I love the things I learned about learning to listen, validate and empower.  Seems so easy but many times we want people to just feel better and be happy that we sometimes disregard their feelings.  It is hard to do but good stuff.

The following are the episodes I share the principles of the book:

Then I also two of my favorite episodes where I learned more about forboding joy and our happiness set point as well as appreciation being the antidote to fear.

Then I also share the most popular episodes - they are both from the book

The Glucose Revolution by Jessie Inchauspe

The last part of the episode I share the goals and thoughts I have about goals for this year.  One thing to really think about the why.  So if you had a magic wand and had the result you wanted right now, how do you think you would feel?  And how do you think you might be different?  Also remembering that achieving goals are more about the process of getting there than it is achieving the goals.  Because you change as you go through the process.  I like keeping that in mind - the process has purpose.

Then I also loved the quote I share from the Old Year Resolutions from Benjamin Franklin.  He was commenting on his pursiut to achieve moral perfection over the many years of his life.

“Many years later, Franklin admitted that he never was perfect, despite his best efforts. His final assessment, however, is worth remembering:

“But, on the whole, tho’ I never arrived at the perfection I had been so ambitious of obtaining, but fell far short of it, yet I was, by the endeavour, a better and a happier man than I otherwise should have been if I had not attempted it.”

I am also going to try to set goals quarterly.  So that I can go back every three months - see how I am doing, make some adjustments if needed and then make additional goals depending on how things are going.

Lots of good things to look forward to  -- here is to looking back at 2023 and also looking forward to 2024!
