Episode 192: momentum

momentum - episode 192

“Nothing new is easy at the beginning.”  This week I experienced momentum as we were finishing up my daughter’s bedroom redo.  So in this episode I share what helped me gain my momentum this week and how it kept getting easier and easier to keep going.  I then share the physics definition of momentum. I also explain the force that we need to get us out of the state of rest, which is not easy.  Near the end I share how momentum can benefit our spiritual lives as well.

Show Notes:  Hi Friends! I hope you enjoyed listening to this episode.  Below are all the references.

What I learned this week:   Momentum does really help when you are trying to get things done.  I just go over the big push and felt that all the things that we needed to get done felt easier and easier.

This website defined the physics of Momentum

Momentum is a commonly used term in sports. A team that has the momentum is on the move and is going to take some effort to stop. Momentum is a physics term; it refers to the quantity of motion that an object has. A sports team that is on the move has the momentum. If an object is in motion (on the move) then it has momentum.

Momentum can be defined as "mass in motion." All objects have mass; so if an object is moving, then it has momentum - it has its mass in motion. The amount of momentum that an object has is dependent upon two variables: how much stuff is moving and how fast the stuff is moving. Momentum depends upon the variables mass and velocity. In terms of an equation, the momentum of an object is equal to the mass of the object times the velocity of the object.

Momentum is a vector quantity. As discussed in an earlier unit, a vector quantity is a quantity that is fully described by both magnitude and direction. To fully describe the momentum of a 5-kg bowling ball moving westward at 2 m/s, you must include information about both the magnitude and the direction of the bowling ball. It is not enough to say that the ball has 10 kg•m/s of momentum; the momentum of the ball is not fully described until information about its direction is given. The direction of the momentum vector is the same as the direction of the velocity of the ball. In a previous unit, it was said that the direction of the velocity vector is the same as the direction that an object is moving. If the bowling ball is moving westward, then its momentum can be fully described by saying that it is 10 kg•m/s, westward. As a vector quantity, the momentum of an object is fully described by both magnitude and direction.

I also talked about how we need a bit of force to get us into momentum because of the problem of interia.  Which is also called Newton's Law of Internia which says that an object at rest, or an object in motion, will stay at rest or in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. (https://study.com/learn/lesson/law-of-inertia.htm

A lot of times it is my intertia at rest that makes it hard at first to get going.  But once you get over that hurdle of that then momentum can help move you forward.

In this article by Brenden Baker, he  helps us with a few tips to help us get going with momentum:

Momentum, when applied to ideas of motivation, enables you to start thinking clearly, see that your goals are reachable, and find a sense of purpose, power, and direction. Learning how to build momentum is, therefore, one of the first steps to finding success in life.

By building momentum, you are creating a world in which you are more productive, more effective, and more efficient. Momentum helps you get over the initial hurdle of not being able to start something and then pushes you through to the end. Momentum helps build positive thinking and energy to help you progress towards your goals.

3 key strategies for how to gain momentum -

I also liked this article that mentioned about creativity helping you gain momentum.

“Creativity is the key to creating momentum in life. Everyone has this innate ability, and by embracing it, we can achieve happiness and fulfillment.

Take small steps, celebrate accomplishments, and maintain a growth mindset.

Let creativity guide you, and watch as you gain momentum and lead a fulfilling life. Keep the magic alive by creating and cherishing each moment.”

This the youtube video from the Mindset Mentor - Rob Dial - who mentioned a few things

Momentum - it takes a while to get going but once you get started it gets easier - you can feel it at your side

Action before motivation

Less resistance feels more natural
