““Singing bonds you more than any other group. It acts as an ice breaker and somehow can connect you faster than other types of activity.” For this episode I share a little bit about my journey into getting into my acapella group in college and what that meant for really the rest of my life. It was also delightful to discover that there was research behind the feelings of closeness and bonding that I felt with the group that is created by singing and making music together. I have a few quotes from some of the studies that I found which basically reveal that singing can really create a great bond with a large amount of people quickly due to the hormones that are released when we are singing So listen as I share my story and research about the impact singing has at being the best ice breaker.

Things I learned this week : Singing really helps develop a sense of closeness with a group. I think I have experienced this a number of times but it was good so compelling for me to have it back by some research that I found. The fact that our bodies release two hormones during singing. The first oxytocin - which helps our bodies create a feeling of trust with others. It also is the hormone that can increase our pain tolerance. (Which is how they tested the hormone being present in the body during some of the studies) The other hormone is beta-dopamine which gives us a sense of pleasure and relieves anxiety. It helps us to feel good in general. Both of these two things really makes sense to me as I usually feel so good after singing with a group as well as feel closer to the people I sing with even though I may not even know them that well. Below are all the articles and the TED talk that I found regarding these findings.
