emotional bank account from 7 habits of highly effecitve people - Episode 99

“... our most constant relationships - like marriage, require our most constant deposits.” This week we take a pause from learning more about another Habit from 7 habits of highly effective people as I share a concept that is important for the remaining 3 habits. It is the metaphor of the emotional bank account. We build trust with others as we make deposits like kindness, honesty, and keeping our promises to name a few and make withdrawals when we act unkindness, dishonestly or fail to keep our commitments and promises. This episode share 6 major deposits that Stephen R. Covey lists in the book that can help us to build better relationships.

Show Notes: Hi Friends! I hope you enjoyed listening to this episode. Below are all the references.

Things I learned this week: The Emotional Bank account is a really great metaphor for learning to build trust with others. The idea is that you can make deposits - when you do things like - showing courtesy, kindness, honesty, and keeping commitments. These deposit will build trust with another person. You can also make withdrawals - when you do things like - showing discourtesy and disrespect, overreacting, and betraying trust. Withdrawals then take away weakens your relationship with another person. When trust is high (or your emotional bank account is high) communication is easy, instant and effective. When the trust is low (or you have taken our too many withdrawals from a persons emotional bank account) than communication is hard. It is like walking on mind fields and you have to be careful with everything that you say. Building trust is not a quick fix it takes time and patience.

Stephen Covey mentions 6 major deposits to building trust.

1) Understanding the individual

2) Attending to the little things

3) Keeping Commitments

4) Clarifying expectations

5) Showing personal integrity

6) Apologizing sincerely when you make a withdrawal
