Things I learned as a substitute teacher - Episode 142

I was willing to work despite my fears.”  It is time for me to reflect a bit on the things I learned from being a substitute teacher.  It was quite a challenging 3 months but there were so many things I gained from this experience that I share.  A few examples are understanding the age group I prefer to work with, becoming more brave when taking assignments and I especially loved seeing how the Lord would help direct my day.

Show Notes:  Hi Friends! I hope you enjoyed listening to this episode.  Below are all the references.

What I learned:   Things I learned while being a sub.

What grade level I enjoyed working with - definitely high school was the best.

Always have a back-up plan or even something in your head when time runs out and students need something to do.  It is so much easier to teach then simple wish and hope they do their work and behave.

I learned to be flexible and work through my fears.  It really is pretty nerve racking when they switch an assignment.  But I realize each time how strong I really was and can try anything - even if is goes terrible wrong.

I learned to always as for help.  From the secretary at the main office, to teachers and staff and especially security.  Everyeone is trying to make school the best so is willing to help you out.

I learned to be brave and try new classes.  Each time I learned something new which helped me either decided I liked subbing for this type of class or that I did not.

I learned to use my authority voice at times and then also recognize when I need to engage the students better.

I learned that I really enjoyed teaching math classes.

It is so much better when the teacher has an assignment for them to complete and we can work together then just watching something

I also learned alot about a teacher's classroom management and their expectations for their students.

There are so many little rules that would have been helpful to know, like how many can go to the bathroom, do they need a pass, are they allowed to visit their locker, can I send them to the nurse at any time - so many things I just need a general rules for that teacher.

Most of all I  loved looking for the way the Lord would be with me throughout my day.  It really is a scary situation at first and I would see little tender mercies and even little miracles that would just help me get through my day.
