Begin with the end in mind -Habit 2 from 7 habits of highly effecitve people - Episode 97

“If you were at your own funeral, what would you want people to say?” Habit two, from 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, is to begin with the end in mind. Like picturing what your family or friend might say at your funeral. Stephen R. Covey helps to explain this concept by also explaining about everything having two creations, a mental and a physical. I explain those two ideas and then get into the notion of writing your own mission statement. With that concept there is a need to get to a deeper level to understand your center and what drives your security, guidance, wisdom and power. As I try to share these concepts I also share a situation I had with my daughter this week in which I wished I had begun with the end in mind.

Things I learned this week: There was a lot to unpack but I think the gist of this really is to think about the end of your life. What do you want people to say about you at your funeral? Then Stephen R. Covey then helps to explain and get us to that point. Because we need to know where we want to go and then see where we are now. I really love the idea of a first and second creation. With the first Habit, being proactive - that is the knowledge that you can create and then with Habit 2 we become the creator. This means we can decided how we want our life to go by thinking ahead. There may be some ideas or scripts that come from our family, society, and many other things but the best part about this habit is that we get to take some time and decide if we really want to continue becoming and doing all of those things and ideas. I also like this concept of making a mission statement for myself and also for my family. I am going to spend some time really thinking through where my center is, and if it is based on principles for that is another key point Mr. Covey makes. We need to have a mission statement based on correct principles that will then get us to the point where we can feel like we had led a life we wanted to lead.
