“When you make a commitment you build hope, when you keep it, you build trust.” Finishing up the last 3 behaviors to build trust from the Book, The Speed of Trust by Stephen M.R. Covey. These behaviors include, Listen First, Keep Commitments, & Extend Trust. The first two are quite familiar as they are part of the 7 habits. The last one Extend Trust is a little different as you begin to use trust as a verb rather than a noun. Also I share how he helps you to understand a little bit how to extend smart trust. Plus next week’s episode will go into more depth about smart trust. I also share a quick overview of the last parts of the book about organizational trust, market trust and societal trust. It is amazing to think about the impact the “clean and green” experience of being trusted had on Stephen M.R. Covey’s life.
Show Notes: Hi Friends! I hope you enjoyed listening to this episode. Below are all the references.
Things I learned this week: This week I have continued to share and learn about the 13 behaviors that help build trust from Stephen M.R. Covey's book The Speed of Trust. This week I cover the last 3 behaviors, 11, 12, & 13. Here is the summary of each behavior. I invite you to pick one to work on that you feel might help as you build trust with your family and others.
Behavior #11: Listen First - Listen before you speak. Understand. Diagnose. Listen with your ears- and your eyes and heart. Find out what the most important behaviors are to the people you're working with. Don’t assume you know what matters to others. Don’t presume you have all the answers – or all the questions.
Behavior #12: Keep Commitments - Say what you’re going to do, then do what you say you are going to do. Make commitments - both explicit and implicit - very carefully, and keep them at almost all costs. Communicate when you can’t. Make keeping commitments the symbol of your honor. Don’t break confidences. Don’t attempt to “spin” your ways out of a commitment you’ve broken.
Behavior #13 - Extend Trust - Demonstrate a propensity to trust. Extend trust abundantly to those who have earned your trust. Extend trust conditionally to those who are earning your trust. Learn how to appropriately extend trust to others based on the situation, risk, and credibility (character and competence) of the people involved. But start with a propensity to trust. Don’t withhold trust because there is risk involved.
Plus in the rest of the book it talks about the other areas of Trust or what he calls the 5 waves of trust. If you think of a pebble when it gets thrown into a pond and the waves that then go out. That is what his metaphor is related to. The first two waves - Self Trust - included the 4 cores of Credibility and Relationship trust included all of the 13 behaviors that I covered from Episode 114-116. The last 3 waves he calls - Stakeholder Trust which includes - (3rd Wave) Organizational Trust -which includes your family; (4th Wave) Market Trust -which you can think of as your reputation and (5th waves) Societal Trust - which involved giving back and contributing to making a better place.
Next week we will go a little more indepth with the last chapters about Smart Trust, Restoring Trust and a propensity to trust.
