“I need to tell my brain what to focus on.” Why not? Is a new thought I am trying to work on. I share the scripture from the Book of Mormon that helped me with the new thought. I also tell you about a few different quotes and articles that talk about the importance of belief. I conclude with a practical way to work on negative belief and how you then tell your brain what you want to think.
Show Notes: Hi Friends! I hope you enjoyed listening to this episode. Below are all the references.
What I learned this week: Really this weak it is what I am trying to work on and learn to embrace a new thought, which is Why Not? When my brain tells me that something is too hard or that I can't do something or I get the critical negative thoughts come up, I can then ask myself why not? I stems from the scripture a read a few weeks ago from the Book of Mormon -
1 Nephi 4:1 - And it came to pass that I spake unto my brethren, saying: Let us go up again unto Jerusalem, and let us be faithful in keeping the commandments of the Lord; for behold he is mightier than all the earth, then why not mightier than Laban and his fifty, yea, or even than his tens of thousands?
I love thinking about this new idea - especially remembering that the Lord is mighties than all the earth, then why not mightier than [whatever problem I am dealing with.] This is a helpful thought and one that really goes into believing that you can do something. Nephi definitely had belief that the Lord would lead him and help him.
Here is the quote from the article from James Clear about belief:
“Why are you determined to make these ideas not work for you? Why are you searching for reasons why these ideas won’t succeed instead of figuring out a way to make something good happen?”
“The biggest difference between successful people and unsuccessful ones (in health, in business, and in life) is that successful people are determined to make the situation work for them rather than playing the role of the victim and searching for reasons why a situation won’t work.”
“The biggest difference I’ve noticed between successful people and unsuccessful people isn’t intelligence or opportunity or resources. It’s the belief that they can make their goals happen.”
“One of the most foundational beliefs of this community is that you can become better.
We believe that it is possible for human beings to improve. We believe that it is possible to raise the bar in your own life even if the world around you accepts average. We believe in ourselves and in each other. We believe that if you want better health or more happiness or a more meaningful job that you can make those things happen.
And because of this belief we are willing to test, experiment, and try new things even when we feel uncertain. If you don’t believe that it’s possible to make new things work, then it’s hard to make any progress. I don’t care how good the ideas are, nothing will work for you if you don’t believe in it. And more importantly, nothing will work if you don’t believe in yourself.”
I also loved the idea from Alden Mills about belief being like a river and it starts small but then gains momentum. He had a great story of seeing his potential because of a a rowing coach who helped him to see his legs as strong rowing legs.
Quote that I said in the podcast: " The power of a river isn’t created in an instant; it builds as it continues to flow. This makes a river unstoppable, and your ability to believe in yourself must do the same thing over time. It must keep flowing – and you must always believe in yourself. Like the river, as you continue to believe in yourself, you will be able to conquer all obstacles in your path."
I finish off with some info I got from the lifecoach school podcast Episode 35. There was a alot of good information. First - you worth is already set - so don't waste your time and energy wonderfing if you are worth something. "You never look at a baby that's born and question its worth. Is it worthy to be in this world? Is it worthy to have a life? Is its body good enough? It just is and we were all that way.”
Then she shares that we first need to see what we are believing. Write it all down. Start with a certain topic and write down all of the beliefs that you think about it, whether it be your job, losing weight, your money, your marriage. Write is all down and then look at it. And then turn the thoughts that are negative to either neutral or positive thoughts that you can believe. Slowly as you see what you believe and then you can believe it makes a difference. Then you decide what you want to believe and keep telling your brain that each day. Plus she also tells us to write down our goals. She said she understand why we sometimes don't write down our goals due to the fact that they seem unbelievable. But that is the point, a goal is something you haven't done yet so it is supposed to be unbelievable. I love these next two quotes:
“The other practice that I do and this is really important, is I write down my goals. I don't know what you all are doing but a lot of you are not writing down your goals. What's the reason why? Because you don't believe them. You don’t believe that you can achieve them. That's okay, goals are supposed to be unbelievable. You haven’t achieved them yet but working and practicing on believing them will do what … When you believe in a goal, what does that tell you? When you believe in it with your whole heart, then you're going to achieve it. Because what you believe, truly believe, is what will create the results in your life.”
“I read my goals over and over and over again because I need to tell my brain what to focus on. I need to tell it what to do. I need to tell it what to believe.”
I like this idea of telling our brain what we need to believe - like for me why not? It doesn't matter if I feel like I am getting to old, or I don't know how or any other thought that I might have. I can tell my brain what I want to believe - even if I may not believe it yet. Why not?
