“In any case, calories measure heat generated, nothing else.” This week I continue sharing parts of the book, Glucose Revolution by Jessie Inchauspé. In the last part of the book, Jessie Inchauspé writes about 10 hacks that we can try to flatten our glucose curve. Doing this gives us more energy, reduces cravings, can help people to sleep better, and even lose weight. This week I share Hacks #1-5. Simple tips to help you slowly change your diet in a real and manageable way such as eating in the right order or eating a savory breakfast. I also share a few of the things that I have been doing as well as some ways I have been trying to invite my family to do as well.
Show Notes: Hi Friends! I hope you enjoyed listening to this episode. Below are all the references.
Things I learned this week: This week I introduce you to 5 out of the 10 of the Hacks that Jessie Inchauspé shares in her book Glucose Revolution.
Hack #1 - Eat in the correct order - that means eat veggies (or fiber) first, then protein, then fat and then your starches and sugars. Simply learning to do this help provide a more our bodies with more energy because is doesn't have to work as hard to get the excess glucose out of your blood stream and stored in your, liver, muscles or fat cells. She compare our stomach to a sink and when we eat veggie first they have fiber which will not spike our blood sugar. And then this acts as a mesh in a way as the rest of our food waits to get digested. She says any veggies will do.
Hack #2 - Add a green starter to all of your meals - this might seem like she is saying the same thing when actually she is saying to add more food to your meal. It is the same idea as the veggies first acting as a gentle mesh liner in our stomach as we digest the other things that we eat.
Hack #3 - Stop counting calories - and I love this one! For she really helps us understand how a calorie is measures. From her book she writes: “To measure how many calories are in , say, a doughnut, here’s what to do: dehydrate the doughnut and place it in a cubicle submerged in a water bath. THen light the doughnut on fire (yes, really) and measure by how many degrees the water around it warms up. Multiply the temperature change by the amount of water in the container, the energy capacity of water(which is 1 calorie per gram), and you’ll get the number of calories in a doughnut. “ What she points out with this hack is that some food may heat up water in the same way but that they each have different molecules. 100 calories of fructose, 100 calories of protein, and 100 calories of fat will all do very different things in our body because of their molecules. So stop counting calories!! Halellujah!
Hack #4 - Flatten your breakfast curve - She says the best way to start your day is not begin with a glucose spike even though most things offered for breakfast are of the sweet variety. If you simply change your breakfast to a more savory breakfast you soften your glucose curve, reduce your future cravings later in the day and it also gives you more energy. So replace your cereal with some eggs. (I know sad, cereal is really pretty good a spiking our blood sugar)
Hack #5 - Have any type of sugar you like - they are all the same. This one just really helps us understand that no matter if you are sweetening your food or drink with honey, agave, table sugar or raw sugar they will all do the same thing for our body. So don't fight over which sugar is the best. They all can spike our blood sugar.
I love all these hacks and especially love the stories that she shares from the people from her glucose goddess community that have used them and been able to help flatten their curve and the results that doing that has in their lives - like more energy, better sleep, no brain fog and losing weight.
